Off Post Housing around Rucker

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to ship to BCT on December 27 and report to Rucker on March 17. That'll give us about 10 days to get everything squared away in Texas and move to Alabama. This will be our first move for the Army so I'd like to get as many ducks in a row as possible prior to shipping to basic.

My wife and I have a Doberman so unfortunately we won't be able to live on base. We're expecting him to severely limit our available options off post as well so we're trying to get a feel for the various towns/communities surrounding Rucker so we aren't scrambling if our top area doesn't work out.

I don't know much about Alabama or Rucker but our current plan is to focus primarily on eastern Enterprise and Daleville based on the little info we have. I found a thread from earlier in the year recommending the east side of Enterprise (Freedom Drive area) but I haven't found much on Daleville. It seems like it'd be easier to get on Rucker from the south and it's much closer to Cairns. Does Daleville have any negatives outside of it being a small town?

Are there any other areas that we should consider? Ozark looks to be on the wrong side of Rucker and Dothan seems too far.

Daleville is literally a black hole. Avoid at all costs, except for The Hangar/Wings and The Diner.

I disagree. Found an awesome home in Daleville. Takes me 5-10 minutes to get to B Co, PT, or the bus for flightline to cairns. 20 mins to Dothan on the weekends. There are a few really nice neighborhoods I know of buried in Daleville but you wouldnt know they were there unless someone took you, or you got lost since they are off of the main strip.

Are you moving up in between basic and wocs or waiting till after wocs? Coming from basic you report directly and if your class starts then you will only have about 3 days off. It looks like 10 days on paper but account for BCT graduation, 2 days travel, the weekend, and the 3-4 days pre WOCS where your class has not officially started but your prepping for it. I took leave after WOCS to move the family down. So did everyone else who came through BCT first with me. So that would put you needing a house sometime in early april if you wait till after WOCS.

I expect to be leaving around that time and have a house in Enterprise i'll be looking to rent for 850 a month. 3BR 2bath 2 car garage, fireplace and large deck in backyard in a good neighborhood. 15 min gets me to B co, lots of other flight school students in the neighborhood. Bills have been between 140-170 a month for electricity and water and garbage run about 40. Cool with pets, house has doggie door and large back yard. We would need a pet deposit but no pet fee, so if no damage outside of normal use you'd get it all back. The only thing about the dog breed would be to make sure you have a renters insurance policy that does not exclude the breed and we would do the same if your interested. We will be using a local management company so any issues would be handled by local people in case of something needing repair.

FWIW, you can't drive to Cairns, your forced to ride the bus from Rucker. I have a buddy who could have been there in 3 minutes but instead had to drive 15 minutes the wrong way to get on a bus and ride down there.

So you wouldn't have exactly 10 days between BCT and WOCS?

Most people opt to move their family after WOCS? Is that because they will have more time to actually move?

Also, I plan on moving into Enterprise. Is there always a decent amount of vacancy year round?

Nope, we graduated, drove down and signed in the next day, had the weekend, then on monday it started but we officially didnt pick up as a class until wed or thurs if i remember correctly. That class date does not include in processing and BCT graduation, which are not accounted for in either timeline. I thought the same thing, that I would have 10 days in between, but got a weekend instead. My family drove up for graduation, drove me to Rucker, and then went back home for 7 weeks. Plus if your orders are messed up like a majority of ours were , coming from BCT your not authorized to move your dependents since its a TDY school, that had to be fixed while we were in WOCS and is apparently pretty common.

Thanks for the thorough response! I just assumed everyone moved prior to WOCS. I didn't realize everyone was bused to Cairns, either. Your home seems like what we're looking for. If it's still available in early May (looks like May 5 should be the end of WOCS) we'll definitely be taking a look.

Several people (including myself) lately have been moving their families down before the start of WOCS, Most of the guys that have been doing this are the ones who ended up on holdover status for one reason or another, but typically security clearance issues. As BM1 said, many times the orders are screwed up if you have dependents, though this seems to have been strictly a Benning issue the past few months. The HHC XO works really hard to get these orders fixed though in a pretty quick time frame.

Dunwoody area in Enterprise was way overdeveloped by a greedy investor back in 2008. As a result, rent prices on all of the townhomes there haven't changed since. Its also a short drive to the Enterprise gate.

Hey do you think it would be posible to get a trailer (my granpas trailer) and put it on Rucker when I'm going to be flying helicopters before Ranger school? Its just your basik 1971 Airsteam Land Yacht international Camper Trailer (Shes about 31 feet). We don't want to bring the gnomes or the yard globes but since i'm joining the boys club I made some way way sweet garden chimes out of soda pop cans - - super wikked i know. Anyways, let me know if the trailer works America because home is where the heart is and our 1971 land yacht is home so America. Home is where we park it USA. Screw ISIS. I member my granpa and I were driving the land yacht to Jellystone Nashunal Parque and I was like RV THERE YET? Get it? Lets get those push ups in America. One last thing do you guys know if my Lacoatuh will have camo colors or just a plain helicopter thanks.

Totally possible. You're also authorized to park up to four broken down POV's outside of it.

I don't know, granpa told me to watch out when making deals with the casino people. Is it a teepee or an actual house? I think the land yacht will have to do, especially if we can bring four of our project vehicles. We have an 85 Yugo GV, 70 AMC Gremlin, 66 peel trident and a 98 fiat multipla. You can probably imagine the stares me and granpa get when we get one of them running and cruise our local boulevard. Sorry have to go to pushups America go USA getting ARMIE STRONG.

Hello all!

I am scheduled to attend basic in Feb followed by WOCS in May. I was wondering how the housing was on base at Rucker and if anybody could give me some insight and or opinions. From what it looks like, it seems like it’s not bad. From what I understand after WOCS you get time to move your family in. I have a wife and a 2 year old son and this is will be our first time in the military. With that being said, I feel like I would feel more comfortable with them living on base. I suppose it would help them become a little more acclimated to military life and the driving time for me seems like it would be a little shorter. Thanks

I don't have any kids but I love living on post. The convenience is bar none. The housing is also very good. I know there is community centers all over Rucker. I'm sure someone with kids can chime in.
