RotorRunner
I'm not saying I am an expert, but I will offer this. There is a LOT of stuff almost timed out on this ship. The main rotors are going to be a huge chunck of change to replace. Several of the bearings are about gone. This ship looks beautiful, but it is going to be a serious investment to keep it flying over the next few hours.
cross-eyed
Modern day = diff. powerplant, larger rotor blades, and other changes give it larger (950lb) payload, 2050lb gross wt., Pilot + 2 passengers (center seat), taller mast, larger instr. panel, elastomeric rotor dampers (virtually eliminating ground resonance issues of A-model) ......many others. Guest pokey
We have an old 63 A model here. If it has had all the upgrades, (the old M/R thrust bearing, low-speed T/R conversion, 4-screen carrier, new style gage pack, new style tailboom saddle fitting, the heavy OR modified rear cluster fittings) then they can be as good a ship as any TH-55 out there--with the exception of the 28 volt electrics, and the manual trim ( which is basically useless for pattern work) the manual clutch?---we have grown to actually like it ! We did all the upgrades AFTER my customer brought it to me for an annual inspection,,,,he got a pretty decent deal on the ship ( had it had all the upgrades---but? he was clueless) so roughly 40 thousand for the ship plus another 50 or so to upgrade it? BTW i checked that ship out on ebay,,,,,,you will have blades coming due left and right, and the M/R carrier soon too. altho 40 thousand? will get one started. ::rotorhead::
Guest pokey
one MAJOR drawback to these old ships that i forgot to mention is that they have a carburetor ! We we looking into converting it to fuel injection,,,,, lots $$ and almost need to disassemble the engine to determin IF it qualifies for FI, (a camshaft P/N matter), so this one is still carbureted, can you imagine? trying to manually trim this old girl, ( it has trim wheels for fore/aft & left right---below the left cyclic--kinda like airplane trim wheels) then carb ice sets in,,,,,,,,,,?! luckily we never encountered that problem "yet"
