tenwaystofly
Hi all, I am curious, how does the majority of CFIs (and any pilots for that matter) get paid? Are you: an employee getting paid weekly, a subcontractor, an independent- billing directly. also do you receive a W2 or a 1099 for (us)tax purposes? Guest rookie101
CFI's get paid for teaching time, meaning that they only get paid when there teaching someone, I think it's $25 but again thats only teaching time. When there sitting there doing nothing they aren't getting paid. Hope this helps. rookie101

i4iq
But are CFII's employees or subcontractors? Let's say you were a CFII at a small school, could you also work for another small school? If so, how would you bill the client (the school), as a business or self-employed etc?
svtcobra66
Instructors in Canada start at about $50,000 a year. Is that canadian currency?
flingwing206
It's a mixed bag here in the USA, some places treat CFIs as contracters, others treat them as employees. Almost all pay per hour worked and not much else (unless/until you reach a chief pilot position).
Ace
Instructors in Canada start at about $50,000 a year. Does that mean they will make that $50,000 gauranteed, and more on top of that if they work more hours? Or is that what they could make working 8 hrs/day, 5 days/week, or something similar to that? I have been instructing for about five years. what I'm curious about is a survey of *how* others out there get paid not what we get paid. I'm thinking of starting a new business. BTW. I've always been paid as a contractor for instructing.
southernweyr
If you read the IRS guidlines most CFI's should be getting paid as an employee not as a contractor. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/articl...d=99921,00.html
