T-700-GE-701C/CT-7 question

I am working on a UH-60L, and it throws a code relating to a faulty alternator stator. After removing stator I find oil in the stator and the alternator rotor pad. My question is...is there supossed to be oil in that area or do I have a bad D-axis seal? My tech manuals will not specify this fault in its inspection criteria. :unsure:
