tvman345
If you're in the Northeastern US, more specifically West Chester, Pennsylvania, Rotorfest 2006 is this weekend!! I was looking at the website and found out about RotorRally 2006 which is taking place during the show. I don't want to post the whole description here, but if you check out the website address I put below and look under "Performer Information" it is at the bottom. Basically it says that some of the top pilots from around the country will be showing their skills in anticipation of a nation-wide competition to select a team for the 2008 World Helicopter Championships. (New Olympic sport anyone?) Does anyone know any of these pilots? What their backgrounds are? I will definitely be going to check out the whole show. I will take some pictures and put them up for everyone to check out. http://www.schultzairshows.com/Rotorfest2006.htm -C
Ross85
What is this Helicopter World Championship? I've never heard of it, what kind of things do they do in the competition?
HeliZach
I was at rotorfest this year, as i have been for the past four years. I felt that it wasn't as good this year as in the past. In the past the USCG has done a SAR demo and the army had a CH47 performing, but none of that this year. The highlights of this year's show were probably the Canadian 412 demo and the bell 47 demo. The Army black daggers and an r22 and r44 also performed some autos. As far as the World Helicopter Championships, i sat in on the information session. Basically it was two Russian pilots, speaking via their translators. They described the competition and encouraged American pilots to take part. This past year they said they had about 15 countries represented. Events include a helicopter slalom with a long lined bucket of water, precision landing, and helicopter dance (coreographed to music of your choice). I'm not too sure how prestigous the event is as I had never heard of it. The one russian pilot that spoke was actually the world champion last year. Strangley, she was a low time pilot with only 200 hours. She owns the R22 that she flew to the win...
Guest pokey
I missed rotorfest (AGAIN) dagnabbit !! I was at the national championships 5 years ago at Blairstown, NJ tho. Mainly just precision hovering, landing, a navigation timed/course which led the helicopters/participants off airport for 1/2 hour or so, & w/ 2 ppl in the helicopter w/ a 50 foot or so rope w/ a bucket of water, the passenger is in charge of the bucket & setting it on a "table" thru a tight ground course.... Not very exciting to watch to say the least. Here are a few pics of the day: http://www.kdhelicopters.com/Links/helicop...hampionship.htm MY favorite part of the day was the hot dawgs---the hamburgers were pretty good too ! Guest rookie101
Ha, cool photos Ross, thnx's for sharin' them. I thought that it was funny that the title 'Canadian Army' was below the Bell-47 picture as if that was the helicopter they were using instead of those 412ep's . Oh and a CH-53 was there too, now I wish I lived in Harrisburg Pennsylvania instead of Harrisburg, Oregon. I am curios though, what kind of helicopter is sitting next to the S-61 (the green one, not the red one) in the 1st picture, can't quite put my finger on that one.... Ross85
Ha ya the Bell 47 is from Dutch Country Helicopters. I actually got a chance to fly that helicopter last winter. I believe the guy flying it in the picture was the instructor I went up with. He is a very good pilot/instructor. That CH 53 was awesome. I talked to the pilot who flies that thing and he said he was in the Navy for only 3 years. Thought that was pretty amazing. I think one of the best parts of that show was the MD902, I couldn't believe how quiet it was. I show was worth the 6 hr. trip.
HeliZach
The bell 47 was from Dutch Country Helicopters. The pilot was Terry Inch, Owner and instructor. I fly that ship at least once a week. I wish I would have posted previous to the event. Some of us VertRef guys and gals could of got together at the show. Maybe next year!
