Rachel
I love the idea of having visual aids for understanding the concepts of helo aerodynamics, but I sometimes find myself lost if I am taught with a toy helicopter and books. Has anyone had success with videos about aerodynamics? Thanks for your help.R
PhotoFlyer
Sporty's has some helicopter videos, but I don't think they are that great. The best thing you can do is be up front with your instructor about your confusion. Don't forget that you are PAYING for his/her time, and he/she is there to teach you. If you don't understand what is said, then speak up. Experienced instructors should have a repertoire of teaching methods, so that if one doesn't work, another can be used. But if you don't say something, and your instructor doesn't pick up on your confusion, you need to speak up. The instructor-student relationship is a strange one, where the instructor needs to provide good customer service, but also take charge and lead a student when they don't know what they actually need to learn. When an instructor has that "in charge" confidence, it can be intimidating to confront him/her about confusing topics. Often, students are afraid they will insult, or annoy, the instructor by making them explain the same thing 27 times, in 10 different ways; If the instructor is worth their weight, they won't get insulted or annoyed. They may get frustrated, but it's frustration with themselves because they can't help you to understand! Talk to your instructor, because he wants you to succeed, more than you realize! Thanks bud! yeah, that is true, I thought I was an annoyance by asking the same questions, or I'd get frustrated as well by not understanding first off!
