muppetdog Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I need some more hours to get to instruct on one. Does any one need me to sit up front with them on a long ferry flight for cheap? MD Quote

West Coaster Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 You are a licenced commercial pilot. Do not pay a dime to help ferry a machine that is going with or without you. As a licenced pilot helping ferry a helicopter, you are part of the flight crew.... doing a job. This is even worse than a pilot working for free to get hours. The only time you pay to fly is when the person beside you is your instructor. Out of gratitude, by all means pick up the meals and hotel stays for sure. It would be rude not to. When you pay to ferry a machine, alone or with the owner, you set a precedent that screws over all the pilots coming up behind you. Don't do it. Quote
muppetdog Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 Yah, I hate having to pay for it. I have been instructing on a 22 for a while now and just need about 13 more hours in a 44 to be able to insturct on it. Where is a good place to get hooked up with some ferry flights? There are like a million 44s out there now, someone must need one flowen somewhere. Thanks for any help guys, MD Quote
blave Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I have to beg to differ with your grand statement. I have paid $100 per hour to log about 30 R44 hours, on long ferry flights, in the last three or so years (all with the same outfit). Had I not paid the $, I would not have those 30 hours no matter how nice or good looking I am. A low time pilot has to do what he or she has to do to get those precious hours; sitting around not flying but honoring the code that you propose doesn't do anyone any good in my opinion. West Coaster Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 No need to take it personally Dave. I'm on your side man and know how hard it is starting out in the industry and have the scars and bad back to prove it. Wasn't meant to come across as an attack on anyone. It just angers me that this has become the norm. It's not too different from companies that charge their pilots for their yearly PPC. I remember a time when ferry flights were given to deserving pilots who needed the hours. Then someone (a smart one at that) realized that PIC time is so valuable that many low timers will pay for it. That one smart owner, combined with one needy pilot started a trend that made a tough road even tougher. It is what it is. I don't like it but that's me. Quote
LB11 Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 I would think in most cases if someone was going to pay to have there machine ferried, they would want someone with experience who didnt need to build hours in thier particular aircraft. Quote
