klmmarine Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 "To where or not to where" aside. It seems that the majority of the civilian pilots who have posted here (and the ones that I have seen), who wear helmets, wear the SPH-5 or 4B. I was wondering if there are any civilian pilots who fly with an HGU-84 or 68 fitted with civilian comms? And why people make the choices that they do in regards to what helmet to wear. Is it strictly cost, or do comfort, sound attenuation, and protection level weigh in as well? Let me know what you think? BTW I don't want this to turn into a debate on whether or not to wear a helmet. SO if you don't wear one or don't have anything constructive to add, please sit this one out. Thanks- Quote
volition Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I wear a sph-4b when I’m flying civilian machines, mainly due to the low cost of the flight helmet. Quote
delorean Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I wear a Gallet LH-250 with the Oregon Aero kit. Our company provides SPH-5's with TPL liners, but I don't think they're very comfortable. I've tried an Alpha on at Heli-Expo, not as comfortable as the Gallet. But, that's just my melon. Go to Heli-Expo, try them all on, and pick the one that fits you the best. The best part about the Gallet, is that the whole helmet flexs, allowing you to get it on and off easily and provides a snug fit. The worst part is the $1700+ I had to pay and the two month wait. FUSE Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I own an HGU-84. Only reason is because I have a connection that got me one. I love it, just wish it would fit in the Robbie. It literally hurt having to keep my head at an angle like I had too. I ended up just going with a nice ANR headset. Quote
arotrhd Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I'm using the SPH-5 with TPL, ANR & NGV mount (not using NVG at the moment, though) withan Comminnovations flexboom. For me, it was a "known quantity" safety item that didn't have a killer price tag and had a forest of trees to qualify it for the services. Parts are very common and are still fairly inexpensive. I haven't completed a full Oregon Aero yet, but will probably get to it later this year (after saying that for several already). As for the HGU, I have a few friends (former Semper Fi types) that have them and they work well too; the only real complaints revolved around the edgeroll (feeling too sticky with sweat after a day) and a really tight feel some have when the "clamp" it on, as one described the feeling. At heart, I have to admit I'm a Gentex fan and would move up to a -56 at some point, but I am impressed with the Gallet - out of the box like Delorean wrote. Just $$$. I wasn't too impressed but the finish work/detail on the Alphas when I was looking at them a few years ago. Things may have changed. In the end though, I still have headsets - can't get comfortable in some smaller helos (gee, now there's a surprise). Just like I feel safer in a helo than in a f/w, I feel safer with a helmet than headset.$.02. -WATCH FOR THE WIRES- Quote
Finchranch Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I have had a Gallet for about a year. I picked it because it was shorter. My head hit the top of the cabin in the R-22. Now I don't have to sit slumped over all day. I is also a little lighter than the Alpha I was using. The price tag and the wait time was a little had to swallow, but it sure has made long days a little easier. It has the Oregon Areo kit also. It also has CEPs. I can hear better but they would be a pain if you were having to take the helmet on and off. Someone suggested the HAI show. I went there and tried them all on. The fitted this one to my head. I still have the Alpha with noise cancelling if someone is interested in it. I have had a Gallet for about a year. I picked it because it was shorter. My head hit the top of the cabin in the R-22. volition Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 The gallet looks good, but it's heavy and expensive!!! Quote
