Keeping it simple:

I screwed up 20 years ago as a teen and have a felony. Its 20 years old

in October this year, now add in 2 DUI's over the last 20 years.

Yes I have made some seriously screwed up decisions in the past....

What are my chances of getting my PPL?

Thanks,

Frog

I would have to say your chances are very slim, even though it was within 20 years. Even with one DUI it can be very difficult. With two shows that you have a pattern for drinking and driving. In the FAA's eye's they are going to think, "well he drank, got into his car and got pulled over after who knows how many times he got away with it, then got caught again". You are a high risk. Your best bet would be to contact your local FSDO (flight standards district office) and discuss your situation. You can find it at www.faa.gov

Good luck.

Felony, I cant say. However not good in any case. If it was drug related, then I wouldnt even read on.

DUI's will only be the hitch in your medical. If they were greater the 3 years apart and you have some time now from the last one and can provide documents surrounding the legal side, your medical will be delayed, but that is about it.

Good luck. I would contact your FSDO, and a local FAA medical examiner and gather thier recommendations.\

Don't give up, not everyone is ruined for life.

Chances are you should be able to have all charges, potentially the felony charge ajudicated from your record. Contact your local PD and speak with the clerks office, i know here in michigan if it has been five years since the imposition OR you have passed the age of 24 you are eligble to apply for adujication of charges from record. Good Luck!

im not legal to drink yet and i had a DUI & a class B Misdemeanor a year prior to my medical, no problems so far. Except when the doc asked me about incidents with the law i mentioned the DUI and thankfully it has happened far enough away for him not to care.

To get a private am i going to have my background screened more thorougly or is that the worst of it?

I think a felony will generally make it a given that you'll only get to be a passenger... BUT I'm not an expert and I didn't even stay at a holiday inn express last night. I do know that AME's look for patterns of reckless behavior, and those DUI's sure won't help at all.

When you say "as a teen" are we talking Juvenile record or Adult? If it's a juvie offense, I'd say you have better luck of getting your 3rd class medical than if it were adult.

The AME generally doesn't care much about this sort of thing, he's only looking at the medical requirements. OKC is where you'll get caught, if you do. The AME's approval is only provisional, and you don't actually have a medical certificate until it's approved by the FAA docs.

No, I don't think the problem you had in the distant past will effect you to much in getting a Private Pilot Certificate. On one had we tell people who make a mistake or two that if you change your ways you will be able to take up you life again, then we tar and feather you for life. As for the Felony goes, heck they let ex felons drive Over the Road on the Big Rigs. So since I have driven a truck in the past, my guess is the only thing you are going to need to do is paying for the lessons. Now DWU or DWI is another matter. Even then its doable, there maybe some hoops to jump thru but till you try you will never know.
