RotorRunner Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Anybody know of a helicopter training school in or near Tennessee that uses a Schweizer? I know about Valley Helicopter Services, but their machine is down right now. Thanks,RR Quote
PhotoFlyer Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 http://www.sacusa.com/1directory/states.as...ry=FS#Tennessee The only school they have listed is Valley. I don't know where in TN you are, but check out the schools in the DFW area. Quote
RotorRunner Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 I am in East Tennessee. I would like to find something within 350 miles of Knoxville, TN if at all possible. Quote
air_1 Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 There's no other schools besides Valley that I have heard of in TN that uses the Scwheizer. In TN, its hard enough to even find a Robbie school. I know of a place in Nashville that has a couple of Robbies and Scenic Helicopters up in Sevierville. The rates of the Robbie in Nashville they advertise aren't too bad if you do the block rates. Other than that, thats about as far as helicopters go over in this neck of the woods I think. Quote
propwasher Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Does it have to be a Schweizer? I know of a piston Hiller in Chattanooga that will be available for flight training within a week or two. Very nice machine - carries a good load.Regards, Kevin Quote
RotorRunner Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 I would like it to be a Schweizer, but keep me posted on the Hiller please. RR Quote
helonorth Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 How about Tomlinson Aviation? They opened a school in N.C. I don't know if it would be close enough. It might be worth the drive, though. I did my instrument with them in Fl. and thought they were good. Quote

RotorRunner Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 Bossman, Well, I have seriously considered coming up there. What is the situation with your turbine training since the Allouettes are grounded? Are you training in the Huey for $300/hr now? I have completed all but the 3 hours of training within 60 day requirement. I actually have 2.1 hours of that done. That is one reason I hate to change from the Schweizer at this time. How long would it take to learn a new machine well enough to pass a commercial checkride RR Quote

How long would it take to learn a new machine well enough to pass a commercial checkride RRWe are in the process of getting a FH 1100 to replace the Alouettes until we can hash this mess out with the FAA. One way or another. They told us today that they have not grounded our Alouettes, but if we move them without the Export C of A, we would be in violation. The FH 1100 will be a factory refurb ship with a new engine. It will go for $320.00 per hour and $40.00 for the instructor. Switching from the Schweizer to a turbine will take you about 10 hours to get comfortable.bossman Quote

RotorRunner Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 (edited) Guys (and Gals), I want to say thanks for all the replies here and PM's from people who care and want to help out. You all have been very encouraging and helpful. I want to give credit where credit is due. I have been very blessed this past week. I called Sandy Shore at Tomlinson North a couple of weeks ago and he has been non-stop help ever since. He went out of his way to schedule me time slots on an extremely busy schedule and has been tremendously accommodating in every way possible. I have only talked to him four or five times and I already feel like he is a friend. Matt Grove has been my instructor for the last week and has done a phenomenal job. Matt and Sandy both know there stuff backwards and forwards. Matt was in the tough position of preparing me for my CPL-H check ride in a very short time and he did not know me from Adam up until a few days before my check ride. Matt went to work and found the areas where I needed improvement. In 6 hours of flying and a couple hours of ground he had me ready for my check ride! Thanks Sandy and Matt!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Milton Eaton, DPE for keeping me relaxed and being an encourager and teacher at the same time as being an examiner. Today, 8/18/2007, I passed my CPL-H. Thanks guys!!!!!!!!! FlyNHighNFast Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Congrats RR!! I'm looking forward to my time with Milton too, on my PPL. But that won't be for another 30-40 hours or so. Quote

FlyNHighNFast, Good luck... Where are you training? Milton will definitely do you right. He is a super nice guy, very relaxed, very patient, very respectful. Just to give you an example; there was a Young Eagles program going on at the airport during the time of my check ride. There were a bunch of planes there (kind of a hornets nest). There were about 40 kids there, and just as we started to fire up the Lycoming, this young boy walked out to the helicopter, all by himself, and approaches Milton's side of the helicopter. Instead of reaming the kid out and telling him to get back over there where his parents should have ensured that he stayed, Milton took the time to ask him how he was doing. The child said "I have never got to look inside a helicopter before." Milton said "Well, take a minute to look around." Milton then showed the young boy how the pedals moved the tailrotor and the told him "we are getting ready to take off, so you need to get back with your group. Have a good day young man." You never know, he may have just got this young boy hooked!! Tomlinson North was an awesome experience!! RR Edited August 18, 2007 by RotorRunner Quote
