Long Beach,Ca/South Bay Pilots

Well, I'm not officially a pilot yet, but I'm about to start my training - just trying to decide between schools: either Celebrity helicopters in Compton or LA Helicopters in Long Beach. Haven't decided which one yet. My plan is to go Private all the way to commercial/CFI/CFII? I posted for responses on the two schools a couple of days ago but haven't seen my post yet, probably because I'm a new poster. I've alread demo'd with Celebrity and have visited LA Helo - just trying to get some folks opinions.

I'm a South Bay native and still reside here.

Derek- Nothing bad about Celebrity...I just dont know anyone there. I dont want to talk bad about any schools at LGB..However, I would be careful going anywhere down there EXCEPT LA Helicopters. Mike R is a great guy, good CFI's...I would recommend anyone flying out of LGB to take a look at LA Helo first..good school, honest business.

 

Now, to the post. I fly out of VNY, but often run down to LGB...does that count?

 

Rotor 91 flies out of TOA...but he'll post himself in a day or two !

 

BTW..I have wanted VR to create a So Cal page for us for some time. I sent Rey an email once on it...maybe someone can drop a hint for me? There are at least 20 of us in the greater LA area that use VR regularly..I went flying at 7 am this morning...89F on the tarmac !!! Lil hot in LA right now..

I've read from and benefitted from many of your previous posts - thank you! Well, this morning I discovered PCH Helicopters @TOA.Much closer to me and nothing but good reviews! I've sent Erik an email and am checking out his site right now. I hope to check out his school this week.

Sure - why wouldn't running down to LGB count?

That was the reason for the post, trying to get an idea if others would be interested. This would include get togethers, BBQ's, Fly ins and the web site but the forums would still link to JH and VR since I think both are really good sites too.

Couple of us locals do get together informally. Its pretty cool when you get 3 or 4 helicopters coming in for breakfast ! Last meet was at Brackett..we've been talking about going to Camarillo soon...probably 3 or 4 ships

 

PHPA has a good club locally..couple events a year, but its members are all professional pilots, not really any private flyers. Lots of fire. PD, and news guys..

My dad does a bit of buisness from time to time with Allied signel areospace there in Torrance.

We fly into JW alot, a few times a month.

 

My dad has a small place in Hawthorne Ca. and I can be found there alot in the summer.

I may have to drop in to your club, Im thinking this year ill have more time to do some skiing on bear and alot of kiteboarding.

 

I love LA.

 

For now im stuck with an underpowered Rotoway exec that needs some time in the sun. Oregon is all about how much water damage

an aircraft can take before rusting into mush. hehe.

Im going to have to find a spot close to hanger it, I like to step up to an R22 or to the point something that isnt older than me.

haha...

Get one with the PT-6 turbine...if its good enough for AirAmerica...its good enough for me !

 

I have a pix somewhere with me standing next to one by the side door..I'm 6-5 and I am dwarfed by this thing...lots of room for shoes.

All I can say is you missed my final approach to the taxiway, dodging two fixed wings on the ground, the cessna landing next to me on the active, and the coyote darting between the active runway and the taxiway. The only thing missing was the three keystone cops swinging a baton !

 

Good food and company though...

Hahaha! I am looking at heading back down to San Berdoo in Dec/Jan for a bit to get some flying in. Just having fun up here, and trying to whore myself out for whatever out-of-county assignments I can snag for more flying money. Missed the assignment to the fire in San Bernardino-Big Bear this afternoon with a toss of a coin basically. But others will be coming up, fire season is far from over!
