I've been in contact with Mark @ V.N and in conversational e-mails he stated that basically I need a secondary on the loan for something like flight school.

My parents are your typical west coast people, paid a lot but in a crap load of debt . So much so they couldn't buy a car if they wanted to from a dealer.

Here I sit reading post on financing, but I'm not getting scared off because of this.

Me: College graduate, making about 17.50/hr. Saved 5k, settlement check coming from accident 10k+. School cost look to be around 70k.

Has anyone been able to get around this financial part with ease? I'm a R44 candidate due to my weight 259#'s (i was 285, but I've been training, changing my life style from eating habits to no alcohol, and its not going to happen over night but I've got time from the looks of it).

Thanks in advance,

Avid VR reader

lol, i don't think anyone of average wealth can part with 60k easily. and actually i think that is a more realistic training estimate, 70k is a little much. anyone can get a loan these days, that's not the problem. it's the interest and coming up with the money for monthly payments on CFII pay. i have a feeling that most here will tell you to keep saving your money until you can pay for training in full or at least a good portion of it. i agree with this because the more you save before training the easier it will be. you're off to a good start with 15k, so just give it a few more years of saving and see where you're at. start reading your ground, read the forums, and in a year or two with some luck you will have a good sum of money saved and also having waited that long you will know if you still want to be a pilot. i think that is the best way to go about it. also if you wait it will give you some time to cut some more weight. i'm not sure what the cut-off weight is for r22 training but it's most likely around your current weight or possibly a little less. i think goldy is in your weight range + - a few pounds and he can pull it off. but ideally if you could get down closer to 200 you could train in an r22 and save money by not having to pay for the r44. i think on average r22 dual instruction is about $240. whereas dual instruction in an r44 is maybe $460. do the math, for the 200+ hours needed to be somewhat employable, the difference in money between training in an r22 and an r44 is great. i realize that cutting that much weight is a big deal, but it will benefit your training and life more than you can imagine. either way if wish you the best of luck.

Max weight in the R22 is 240 INCLUDING any contents under the seat.. I push it...but Im just there at 240. I move everything..even the spare quart of oil and paper towels under the left seat !!

You're not screwed cause you cant get a loan ...but your training may take a bit longer...save, fly, save fly, repeat until completed !

Until you get under 240 pounds, you can fly the Bell 47 or Sch 300 now, for a lot less money than a 44..

Well I go to the gym every day, crack the scale for the first time in over 10 years at 255 this morning. I'm one of those crazy people that do elliptical for 2 hours and no weights just core training.

Eating oat meal and egg whites my morning consist of Blurpee's, push ups, sit ups, prison squats, and a lot of stretching. Its fun watching people stare at a 6'2" guy w/ a gut almost doing the splits while stretching.

So i know in the next 6 months I'll possibly be seeing 235 at my intensity of training, just can't eat sushi to much.

Add some CIRUIT WEIGHT training to that and you'll lose faster. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate will be. With circuit training you are weight training but at a non-stop pace so your heart rate stays up, but you are building muscle too. You will not put on like 10 lbs or anything, you'll more than likely put on about 2-4 lbs of muscle, but this will translate into a great fat loss than the gain, so you'll lose more fat faster and keep it off with the more muscle. I lost 67 lbs starting last Aug. and was down the 67 by mid Dec. I did however workout 6 days a week, 3 days I did the circuit training for an hour and then at least 30 min on a treadmill, or elliptical, ( you need to change between a couple cardio things to keep the body confused and not get settled so that the cardio becomes ineffective ) and then the other 3 days a week I did cardio for an hour and stretched, did 8 count body builders etc.

Get the weight down for all the life benies for sure, and for the cost savings in training, plus the lees you weigh the more trainers you can fly with and gain insights from different pilots, I've had trouble with a new procedure, schedule with a different instructor for a flight, ( I still have a primary instructor ) and often that instructor did or said it in a different way and the light comes on and I was no longer stuck.

Good luck!

I find it interesting that you aren't learning from your parents. Instead, you are trying to find a way to put yourself in the same situation. My parents are WAY in debt... I decided I didn't want to live like that.

Keep some of that savings aside in case of emergency... so when stuff comes up you don't have to resort to the credit card... otherwise you will be worse off than your parents.

Just be careful

Good luck,

It's funny you mentioned that.

I am debt free. I've already paid off my college in 5 years, then again when my dad started teaching I transfered schoolS. $320/credit vrs 8$/credit...A degree is a degree.

Credit Cards: none I have one but I don't use it, literally sits in a case with a glass stating "in case of extreme emergency"

Married: I guess you have to have a girl friend first, or a good russian web site.

Kids: Not interested in poop factories

Out standing loans: I bought a Scion Xb, because it was 14k compared to the GTO i was looking at that was 28k. 6k left on that little rice rocket

Other then that I just pay a cell phone, and car insurance. Can't afford a place, so I shack in the guest house and just buy food every week (150/wk)

plus I've got a 720 credit score (less due to me cleaning house on my credit cards that I never signed up for and a loan on a motorcycle that I never took).

So financially it would be like going to Medical school for me.

I'd rather train on a Turbine, but if i can hit the 235 I'll go locally on a R22...crappy part is that SHH head quarters is so close and has so many instructors compared to local competition...hahaha f that I'd rather learn from a crack whore

No I worked for them when I first moved out here and couldn't find a job. Had promises of flight training and all the rest. I knew them before I ever found this site and since I worked inside I already knew I was never going to train with them. Six months of "yea, we'll know next week if that's ever going to happen" got old, and the pay sucked.

Now I work for a smaller company, pay like above is ok and I don't have to wear a suit and tie which I've never really been able to stand.
