Optigirl Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Solid State Adaptive Rotor (SSAR). Ive been reading alot about SSAR over the past few weeks and I think my head hurts trying to get to what this really is.Is this a backup of sorts for the Swashplate ? or does it replace the swashplate completely? I have no clue... I dont know if any full size units (helicopters) were tested, But ive seen some small remote controled models. Not really knowing just what im looking at, In truth. Link to SSAR (in Pdf format) Anyone know how this system works? Thanks ~LD Quote
apiaguy Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 This rotor system has no swashplate to tell the blades when to change pitch.... the material of the blade (PZT or the others listed in the article) pizo-electric blade bending is what changes the pitch of the blade.. Think of it as an electic actuated blade that can change pitch "across the surface" of the blade rather than at a pitch change horn or feathering. The concept has been around for years and I hear they are making progress.... but it is very new on the front of technologies so I wouldn't expect anything used in a people carrying helicopter in the next few years.... heck what do I know... maybe!? Optigirl Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 I was looking at the technology department at MIT in vacuum plate forming the other day. mixing rtx344 and carbine fiber and a few others to make a new composite for the use of lightning helicopter body's by removing all metals from the main frame works of the body. 9 times that of steel. and can withstand extreme cold. I ran across this SSAR as I was reading about force vectoring from advanced blowforce (GD) General Dynamics. they had a crazy Idea that a helicopter would in the next 20 years be both a plane and a submersible craft and with alot of technology's taken from the prov-en British AV8 the helicopter would be able to stop its rotor in mid flight and hover. have you sine that movie 6days, lol this is what I think there trying to do in some small part. - the submersible craft would give a Dimensional aspect to warfare. search and rescue and even law enforcement operations Quote
