davesmith Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Hello I’m trying to help a friend find some info about flight training. First off my friend is a police officer for 7 years and to make a long story short he was shot in the line of duty and is now back on the job. He has always wanted to fly for law enforcement but no departments that I have seen offer any type of flight training you have to have all your licenses before they even look at him. He is looking to want to start flight training and wants to know what would be the fastest way to build hours and get flight training completed. Are there any places that help with training law enforcement in helicopters? Anyone that can give any help would be great I can pass your email on to him so he can talk to you direct Thanks for your time and help Quote
Whrilwind50 Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 It would help to know were you are. Most of the Law Enforcement helo operations that I know of only hire from their own ranks. The prospective officer usually has to get themselves to a private pilot license in one form or another and then apply. If succesfull the force will either train or pay someone to train them. The very best place for any information on this is ALEA - Airborne Law Enforcement Association. http://www.alea.org/ You can find out everything you can think of there. There is a listing of all the helo units and their staff and equipment. The is two schools of thought on flying Police Helicopters. One is to train a police officer to fly because they are more in tuned with the requirements of the ground folks and have developed a feel for when something is not right on the ground. The other is to hire a high time civilian pilot because of their experience the crew will be safer and they will eventually pick up some of the police stuff. I can argue either way. If you have specific questions, fire away. Quote

They specialize in NVG training with a lot of the EMS, Air borne law enforcement and Government agencies. If they don’t provide that kind of training they certainly would know who does. Tell your friend best of luck.www.asu-nvg.com Quote
