As a person who is in the "Considering" stage it can be awfully hard to understand what all of you are talking about. I think it would help me feel like less of an ass if people would post common acronyms, abbreviations, and slang accompanied by a short discription.

thanks in advance.

I totally know what you mean. I was lost when I started visiting this site about a year ago. I was just too embarrassed to ask.

If you want to get way over your head- http://www.gps.tc.faa.gov/glossary.html

Some easy ones in the order I thought of them:

Helo- Helicopter ;)

Heli- Helicopter ;)

BTW- is the any reason for using heli instead of helo and vice-versa?

CFI- Ceritified Flight Instructor

GOM- Gulf of Mexico

Med- Refering to medical certificate

PPL-Private Pilot's License

Comm- Commercial Private License

ATC- Air Traffic Control

Non aviation:

BTW- By the way

IMHO- In my humble opinion

ROFTL- Rolling on the floor laughing

LOL-    DUH!!!

There are a lot more. Post specific questions if you have one. Also Google works good. I have found most just by typing the acronym in Google.

Hope that helps.

Beckwith- you can look in the AIM and FAR's for most definitions..sorry, it is what it is. If you think this is bad, wait until your Instrument ticket..

I dont think people toying around with the idea of being a pilot will learn anything from jumping into the FAR/AIM. ;) My eyes still glaze over when I open that book...... It is like it releases some kind of sleeping gas....

Yeah, I agree the FAR/ AIM ( Federal Aviation Regulations/ Airmans Information Manual; see why

we have to shorten things up? ) won't help much. You won't find much help there. I guess since this

is the flight training forum... just ask. Or Personal Message someone if you feel like it's a dumb question and don't want to be embarrassed. Somebody told me once the only stupid question is the one unasked.

go to a bookstore and pick up a copy of The Dictionary of Aeronautical Terms" or similar.

Or just spend a few years hanging around the airport and these message boards..

yeah I've heard that there are no stupid questions but it would be nice to not be an inquisitive idiot.

I know from my own experience as a ski instructor and in outdoor ed that even good questions get old after about the fourth time you answer them, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a place for all those good questions. I actualy love acronyms and abbreviations and jargon I just havn't learned this set yet.
