Navysquid Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Hi my names Scott I've always wanted to be a pilot but things just never seemed to pan out, until recently it seems. I've been really thinking about helicopters the last year or so, I remember seeing what SH-60's, 46's,47's and AH-1's could do. A friend and I are looking at Glacier Aviation, I talked to Mike today and things sound great, I will meet with him November 1st. My friend already went down months ago checked it out and got a flight, we're looking for a few more people that are looking at the same place. I found out in a group the cost will go down and hey any help paying rent and utilities plus a bunch of people to study with can't be bad lol! Seems Glacier has good reviews and they offer housing assistance since they have places to rent, financing, even help getting a part time job. So hopefully after March 08 I can start on my life goal and knock it out of the park. I just need to get my knowledge of helicopters up and I figured this site would be great for that. Quote
Copterpilot213 Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Welcome to the forum Navysguild! If you really want to get a jump on things check out this free .pdf version of an faa approved book that has some good info on the basics of helicopters. http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aircraf...a-h-8083-21.pdf Good luck in your quest to fly, keep us posted! slick1537 Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 (edited) Just remember not to rely on others to pay for rent in and utility in the long run. I mean you may all move down there and becomes instructors and things will be fine and dandy, but on the other hand, everyone may drop out and leave but you, and that will leave you paying for everything. Navysquid Posted October 11, 2007 Author Posted October 11, 2007 Good luck with everything, its a pretty awesome thing to get into! That's why I can't wait till November first, that's the day I go down meet with Mike and get the whole deal. Also did piston Helo's have a sort of comeback? I figured the Huey with it's Turbine killed the piston, or has the piston still been around just behind the scenes so to say. Quote
Hedge36 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 From one squid to another, welcome. I don't post much, but this place is a great source of info... even if half the threads could stand to be merged I assume you're close to separation, if not already? Do you have your GI Bill? Quote

I got out in 2004, and thankfully I still have my GI bill, I used a little before hurricane rita but I have a good amount left. Which is actually one of the things that won me over to glacier avation. Quote

Piston Heli's have stayed around in the flight training and light helicopter segment. They are the low cost options for getting flight training. They also perform other light duty work like aerial photography, light crop dusting, pipeline patrol, cattle mustering, wildlife survey to name a few. Quote

They won't pay towards your private but do kick in after that. It takes about a month to get the VA entitlement doc that tells you how much time you have so go ahead and apply for benefits early. Any 141 school can help you with the paperwork. It's worth the hassle, believe me! Good luck! Quote
