What is a ICAO and how do you get 1?

I thought you had to successfully grow a field of corn, share it out and then present yourself to these people....

OK. Now I feel bad....

 

ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organisation. It sets world standards on all sorts of aviation issues. Not in the least, pilot licencing.

 

An ICAO contracting state (the USA is one) agrees to set minimum standards when issuing licences. Thus, when a pilot goes from one to another, the receiving country has at least some idea of the pilot's standard of training.

 

If you get a PPL from the US you have an ICAO licence. If you get a Commercial, you have an ICAO Commercial etc..etc...
