I just wanted to send a HUGE thank you to everyone on here who helped me out on the message boards. You guys are great and I wish each and every one of you the best of luck!!! If I ever get my medical back (there is a slight chance) then I hope to be on here again! Happy Flying and have some fun for me!!!!!!!!! I already miss it Edited December 6, 2007 by FlyGirl86 Quote
H500pilot Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 (edited) wow I'm so sorry to hear that. If you are in Oregon you can count on a few free rides in my R22 anytime! Edited December 6, 2007 by H500pilot Quote
Sparker Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I don't even know what to say.... this is my biggest worry. Let us know if there is anything you need... Good luck. Quote
captkirkyota Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 MAJOR drag! Why did they take them if it is not to personal, if so please disregard my asking. Lets hope and pray you CAN get it back on that chance. Quote
Pogue Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Wow, that's terrible! I hope you can turn that "slight chance" into a successful one. Good luck. Quote
FlyNHighNFast Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 FlyGirl: Sorry to hear it, that would be my worst nightmare come true. Birds don't belong in cages and you only need that medical to be PIC, time to find a pilot friend that does not mind riding shotgun. Quote
K-38 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 I am so sorry to hear that. That is a nightmare. I hope that you are able to appeal, or that you find something else that you enjoy just as much. Quote

I already miss it That is horrible, and I'm sorry to hear that. If you get a chance, go to the PHPA (Professional Helicopter Pilots' Association) website: www.autorotate.com. Membership costs like 60 dollars, but they have a virtual flight surgeon program that helps pilots reacquire their medicals. It's worth a shot, and would definitely be money well spent! Quote
nbit Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) Sad to hear that news. ...Is your medical deferred, or really gone? I know of a pilot who had a stroke and got his medical reinstated. There are several out there that have had similar conditions and were able to later exercise the privileges of the license. Try to find any method to re-obtain your medical if it what your passion is, and there is any avenue available to do so... Edited December 7, 2007 by nbit Quote
Bradley P Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Sorry to hear about that! I hope that whatever it was that caused you to lose your medical is temporary and hope that you are able to soar again soon. That is also my biggest fear as flying is my life. Quote
Ryan G Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 So sorry to hear about that. Is there any possibilty that you will be able to get your medical cleared?? Quote
arotrhd Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 FlyGirl- Very saddened for your situation and hope you may be able to take advantage of some of the suggestions previously posted...don't give up all hope and keep fighting if it is really important to you. For ALL- Just my $.02: I hope all of you have considered a backup plan if such a situation is encountered, even if it is a temporary medical loss. A DPE that I had for my instrument ride a while back was grounded for almost 4 months earlier this year because of a recent condition that required him to have to take medication for a few weeks...I'm not going to get into the details or condition. Anyways, his Med examiner went to bat for him (as well) & FAA Oklahoma basically replied that they did not have enough information or data on the medication to approve continued flight and to monitor for 90 days. Think of going from earning more than $10k/month to nothing without ANY prior notice. That's real life. Think of what might happen if you've taken out a loan for training (some do, some don't), finish your rating(s) and then have a health issue spring up in which the FAA pulls the medical so you can't go out and earn to pay off the debt. Yikes. For those who have inquired about the usefulness of an AA/AS, undergrad or higher, I would strongly encourage training/education in some other area related to aviation or another field as a backup which would be "portable"...for the fun of it I'm looking adding the FAA dispatcher cert pretty soon. -WATCH FOR THE WIRES- Quote

My sympathy goes out to you! I'm not sure of your situation which caused this, but if it's worth anything, look into getting a Special Issuance? I've been having some battles with the FAA myself, but as long as I can submit yearly test results, all is good (providing there are no abnormalities). I apologize for talking about myself, but I was hoping to give some inspiration. Don't give up! Exaust all your resources, and see what happens. I wish you the best ! Keep us informed. Quote
mechanic Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 for the fun of it I'm looking adding the FAA dispatcher cert pretty soon. I had an issue with Kidney Stones, lost mine for about 3 months. Good thing I am a part time student with a full time job. I had to take an IVP X-ray to prove I was clear of stones, $$$$$$$.. With the new FAA Med Rules, it will pull a flight med and pull a dispatcher too, from duties... Quote
Guest rotorflyr84 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I've never really read a lot on all the rules and regs regarding medical conditions, until I got that dreaded letter. I've had asthma since I was 2 years old, when I was 19 I had a Pheochromocytoma. I never had any problems getting a medical (any class) until about a year ago. This was back before I passed the Farnsworth, but I wrote the FAA to get an approval to take a light gun test. We'll, the return letter was for me to surrender my medical, or provide complete copies of my medical records, etc. Has the FAA upped the heat and are now enforcing these conditions more than in previous years? I completely understand that things are placed for the safety of crew and/or passengers, but going from normal and no problems, to slammed with an SI and having to spend over $1000 annually on the tests I have to submit, is obsurred, especially when for two years now, all results haven't changed. If comfortable, providing an explination as to why you lost your medical would be very helpful, but completey understood if it's very personal. Just wondering if maybe they found something out with you, and decide to do the same thing that happened to me. As I mentioned earlier, I seriously wish you the best in this matter. Quote
FlyGirl86 Posted December 9, 2007 Author Posted December 9, 2007 There is actually a lot going on with my health over this past year that I thought could be managed with medications that were safe per the FAA, but needed stronger treatment. I basically had to choose my health over flying. You can;t fly without your health, so I obvisouly chose that. I won't go into details. Its a rare health problem and one that may be able to be managed in the future with other meidcation once i actually get it under control. Right now, I am definitely looking for a backup career and going to school for other things. If i get my medical back, then i will be back up there flying. If not, I will be doing my second choice job (which is still fun, but nothing beats a helicopter). My dr and I spoke for a very long time about my options and treatment and any other outs, but in the end we both decided this is what had to happen for the time being. Who knows what the future can bring? I am trying to be optimistic. I still get on verticalreference everyday looking at new posts, lol. Flying is something you cant just give up. Even if I cant be up there, I plan on keeping in touch with all my rotor buddies and keeping up with the going ons. I am thankful I found out now, too, instead of ten years down the road when I thought the coast was clear. Or even if i was further into flight training and had spent more money than i already have. I am of course kinda mad at the FAA considering the fact that I feel fit to fly and don't see the danger they are telling me I am presenting flying. I hope to be up here posting happier things in a while with more flight stories and acheivements and happenings. Until then--thanks again for your support and all the options you guys presented to me. I won't give up on flying. I am going to take a break for a while, get my backup career going just in case i lost my medical permanently and then try my hardest to get my medical back and continue flight training. Until then-I might be bumming rides off all my friends so I can at least get in the air every once in a while!! LOL. Thanks again guys (and girls)....have fun up there. And seriously-learn from this and get a backup plan just in case. You never know when this can happen or even sometimes why. There are a lot of things that can make you lose your medical that I obviously wasn't even aware of. And its important to have a good dr, too. Mine was very helpful and told me what I could and could not do, and the benefits compared to the risk. Not all drs would go into detail like that. Ok---I really need to stop writing cause I know I could write forever about this. Safe flying!!! Quote
IFLY Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 If your going to be near Tucson send me a post and we will go fly whatever you want Heli, gliders, airplanes, hanggliders, or paragliders (sorry no turbine ships yet). Jerry Quote
ADRidge Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Flygirl, I had some issues with my medical as well, although probably not as rough as what it sounds like you're going through, and my heart goes out to you. I really hope that you, your doc and the FAA can come to some sort of arrangement where your health doesn't keep you from flying. Have you thought about trying for a SODA? Quote
