Hi there!

first off , i know squat about helicopters. lol

i just need to find the make of a certain one and im asking for if anyone here is really knowledgeable about old helicopters if they can help me.

i know this is not much info to go by but id really REALLY appreciate any help!

ok, this helicopter was made probably 10,20 possibly 30 years ago, (now ive never heard of this but like i said i know squat about helicopters) it has a hundred foot chain attached to it (i dont know whats the pourpose to having a chain, just that there's a chain on it).

its not an RC helicopter, its an actual helicopter that a full grown man can ride in ( and i dont know if just one person can sit in it or two, id imagine just one).

unfortunatley i dont have a picture of it either, sorry.

the reason why i ask,

my father just passed away a few weeks ago and he loved planes and helicopters and at the funeral someone told this story about this helicopter that he owned. well his birthday is in february and i wanted to make a model (*crosses fingers* depending on if there's a kit out there in the world)of this helicopter and put it on his grave as kinda like a birthday presant ( sorry i know it sounds kinda corny, but he never was a flower kinda guy and i still wanted to give him something for his birthday).

thank you very much for any and all help in finding out what kind of helicopter this is!!!!!

sincerely,

amy.

It seems next to impossible to identify this helo without more information. On the other hand, I'd guess a Bell 47. Another thought may be the Jet Ranger series, Alouette, 214, 407, maybe even the 222. Look also at the BK series, Eurocopter, Kaman, and Hiller.

I'm not so sure about the Brantley.

If any of these sound familiar, that'd help a whole lot.

Other than that...

you need to get more information out of your father

"made 10-30 years ago" and 100ft longline, that is a description that fits for like 95% of all helicopters out there...

With a couple more clues, you might get some answers:

How many rotor blades on the top (2, minimum)?

Were the structural members visible (a truss), especially on the back?

Only 1 person in it, or could it take more?

Was it owned by a company, and what did they do with it?

Have you ever seen a similar helo anywhere?

My guess is that you are looking for a home-built or kit type helicopter or Gyrocopter. The 100' of chain, well, again my guess would be that it was used in the drive system from the engine to the rotors, maybe even in used as control linkage. Most newer kits use belts now, but chain was it back in the day...... or so I'm told. ;)

Good Luck

That might be a bit of a problem. In the original post she says that her father died a few weeks ago!

If he was an old time pilot then I would go for something along the lines of a Bell 47 (that's the one used in MASH).

Do a search through Corgi Toys for helicopters. It is far easier to buy a model than try and build one. It takes a long time to build one that looks half decent. That right there is the voice of experience!

I think looking at some pictures would be the best way to find it because you are the only one who knows what it looks like.

Here is a link to a recognition guide with a lot of pictures:

or here is a full list of helicopters:

That link above is great! What you are looking for has to be on there.

That video is going to give me nightmares!! The OH-6, sorry MD500 is a great helicopter that can do many things, but sling load is not at the top of it's list! Yikes!

Superman gave me an idea.

I wonder if it might have been an autogyro that was towed behind a ship like in anitsubmarine warfare?

Other than that, I'm stumpped.

Try the 500, in my book one of the best sling platforms around if your weights are less than 1000 lbs. Very easy to sling with. Hijack over.
