Wannabe1
BTW… Do you guys notice there are a lot of BTWs in this becoming a pilot of a helicopter? BTW the flight school requires 100 hours (Robinson insurance?) before I can carry a passenger on my own in a R22 even if I were to get a PPL in 40 hours? BTW the CFI says most get their PPL in 55 ish hours? BTW after you are qualified to solo, you sign something saying you are on the hook for the $15,000 deductable should you do something bad to the chopper? BTW the Safari kit helicopter cost $6000/yr for full coverage and about $3000 for liability for a 60 hour pilot? BTW You have to go to California to the Robinson school (about $500 and one week including 1 hour of flight) before carrying that passenger? BTW (at Oshkosh 07 from the guy at the Xenon tie down which is next to the Sparrowhawk location right after my gyro flight) he says “did you (me) know that the Gyrocopter you and your wife just went up in was totaled last year after maintenance flight when landing, it rolled over needing a complete rebuild?” BTW the FAA doesn’t really mean what is printed on the back of the 3rd class medical ticket, the part about letting you know if there are any problems no more than 60 days after your physical. John90290
There sure are! Good thing there are websites like this you can access before spending a lot of money. If you are surprised by any of these things after you start, then you didn’t do your homework up front. Good luck
Wannabe1
The one that did 'get me was the FAA not letting me know of any issues with my medical until after the 60 days (medical okay in July, okay from FAA in December). Ended up okay, but I was pretty antsy for a couple of months. BTW... another btw was that I was NOT expecting to be as nervous as I was when I went into to take the FAA written! Guess it has been too many years since I've taken any tests. Passed just fine, but still. There sure are! Good thing there are websites like this you can access before spending a lot of money. That's 7 BTW's. Wow - I've never experienced any of them... You can remove 3 of them if you don't fly the R221 more if you do get your PPL in 40 hours1 more if you don't fly "kit" helicopters1 more if you stay away from gyrocoptersand the last one if you don't have any medical issues It's not just aviation though. It seems to me that pretty much any career / endeavor has BTW's attached to them - that's life.
