In the zone!

Recommended Posts

Ok everyone i promise i won’t do this for every hour of flight.... however today was special for me.

After my first hour of flight last week many of you read my post and pictured just how wild my first hover went. Much like an uncontrollable pendulum.

Well, after that first attempt my instructor had to make a long trip to Michigan and back for work reasons. So a week went by and today i got my second scheduled flight with an instructor and i will have to say the first 15 minutes seemed a lot like the first session...until my third trip back to the center of the pad annnnnd....CLICK......out of nowhere it felt like EVERYTHING slowed down! even the sound of the main rotor....i was in the zone! Finally, i was in control of the cyclic. Then he threw me a curve ball.... the cyclic AND the pedals. It took me a few whirly attempts but eventually i had that down and before i knew it he threw me all the controls at once and.... SWEET :o JESUS!! it was all SO ugly for a good 30 min. until......CLICK......out nowhere again EVERYTHING slowed back down like before and i was sustaining a controlled hover for a solid minute (which felt like a decade to me). Then of course i fell out of the tree and the instructor took the controls.

So to wrap it up... we practiced a taxi, took a quick pattern and brought her down for the day and like you would probably imagine...i had a smile on my face not even Bigfoot himself could smack off!

Even though it was only for a minute i felt pure joy like i hadn’t felt since the first time i rode my motorcycle.... indescribable!

OH YEAH! i also cant wait to get a hold of my instructor on his way back from his trip and tell him how it went! so he will know i still have some hope in me after all! haha :D

You've gotta love that first hover. When I did mine, we were using the PTT radio instead of the hot mic. I accidentally hit xmit instead of PTT and told the tower (on accident, so bear with me) "Holy **** I'm doing it!"

Congratulations!

NOW....THAT'S FUNNY! LOL

In the day, you couldn't use the hot mic, unless you both were using the same kind of headset! A lot better NOW these days!

Ok Big Guy, back in my day, you didnt have hot mic's and the passenger didnt have a xmit button, you had to use the footswitch on the passenger floor.

Oh yeah, we had the original blades, no governor, no gps, only one fuel tank, we never used carb heat and we practiced low G pushovers...Holy Crap ! Why am I still here !

bgot21- Congratulations, you are on the first step of one very long ladder. Dont get discouraged when you get a lil better, and then lose it all on some flight !

I took an intro flight about a week ago. After talking with the instructor we fired up the s300. He then hover taxied, showed me a normal takeoff, then a normal landing. Now is where he said its time for you to hover!!!!!! WOW hovering is a tough thing to do the first time. On the first 4 attempts ( i had control of the cyclic only ) after about 3 secs i had the chopper going in every direction even backwards. Thank god there was a flight instructor with me LOL!!! On the 5th try i held it pretty steady for about 5-6 secs ( i had control of the cyclic and the pedals ). Then we did another takeoff he gave me control of the cyclic and had me fly along a highway. After that it was autorotation time!! I have been waiting to see what that feels like and wow what a manuever. I have been flying high since. Just trying to work out the finances for training now.
