lwalling
I have a business need to fly to DC in the next few weeks and I'd like to fly my ship rather than flying commercially or driving. Any tips? I'll need to get to downtown. What airport, FBO, is suggested for a quick trip in and out? Any tips for dealing with the interesting looking conglomeration there airspace/restriction wise? Gunner
Be sure you are familiar with DC ADIZ procedures... Depending on where you are coming from there al lots of options. Let us know a little more about the trip and I can help you out. I fly ot of HEF every day....
FlyNHighNFast
Luke: 9/11 made flying in that are a bit challenging, as the nearby airports are now closed to non approved transient traffic. Its been 16 years since I've flown in that area, back when I was doing fixed wing training. David Wartofsky, the airport manager/owner of VKX (it used to be W28 back in the day) is a really good guy. Check out the site and how to get approved to fly in as a transient. You can also give him a call if you need more info, I'm sure he will be happy to help. Enterprise car rental can meet you at the field or you can call for a cab. http://www.potomac-airfield.com/
FlyNHighNFast
Hey Gunner, a little off topic here, but I just checked out your page and I love the Len Morgan quote. His was always the first article I would read in Flying magazine.

Flying North from KSVH, will stop for fuel along the way somewhere around Lynchburg insuring I have plenty of fuel once I reach the ADIZ. Still a very new pilot really, so this will be a good trip for me. I want to follow 100% of the rules and understand them in advance though which I believe I do understand most of them. I am not clear on getting advance approval as it appears filing an adiz flight and requesting clearance into the adiz before reaching is all thats involved?http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/adiz-checklist.pdf Theres a FAA DC Adiz awareness online course as well I intend to run through well in advance. This all assumes I avoid the FRZ, and land at one of the fringe airports.
lwalling
This looks like fun, http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/ga/editorial_1831.shtm So to fly in the FRZ, you first have to visit two locations in DC to get approval. Is there no outside-of-DC authority that can finger print and issue that pin? Wow! Fun stuff.
Gunner
Don't bother trying to fly within the FRZ. You will need a waiver. It's not that difficult of a process as I do it for photo flights all the time but it does not make sense for a transient mission. Read up on ADIZ entry and exit procedures. AOPA does a good job at explaining. It's an operational pain in the butt but what can you do. It's certainly not going anywhere. There are various "gates" that you will use to enter the ADIZ. Based on the direction you are coming, Manassas or Leesburg will be your best bet. Feel free to email me and I can help you out. It can be intimidating with the thought of the Coast Guard Dauphines intercepting!!!

It looks like a good exercise in my ability to plan and manage information, and the resultant procedures that come with it . Fun stuff. Here's a link to the AOPA supplied gate-chart mentioned,http://www.aopa.org/images/whatsnew/newsit...notams/adiz.pdf
