I became active on the board about a month before Mr Lancaster had that accident. Every once in a while I'll go back to those old threads with "FlingWing" giving advice in that distinctive way. Never did meet him, but I sure would have liked to, the way he's spoken of by this group.

Rest in peace, Fling.

Wow, it HAS been a year since this tragedy. My prayers to his family.

I do not want to dredge up bad feelings, but I'm very new to this forum, and would very much like to know what happened.

PM's are fine if it's inappropriate to explain on this thread, or can someone direct me to a thread.

RIP John. John was a great instructor in person as well as on this forum. He taught me a lot of things that I haven't learned from others. My thoughts and prayers to his Family and Friends.

I've read most of his threads and saw a beautiful slide show of his pictures. I've gained much respect and admiration for a man I never knew...

I pray that his family and friends experience God's care and blessings...

I'm always saddened by the thought of his early departure, but I smile when I think of him; he was obviously an amazing man !!

I spent many hours flying with John and in classroom discussions, it still hurts knowing we lost him. What an amazing man he was.

Blue Skies and R.I.P John, you will never be forgotton..

In loving memory of John Lancaster (known here as Flingwing) who died this week 1 year ago in the GOM. I still miss you mate.

Damien.

Flight is freedom in its purest form,

To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;

To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,

To feel the joy that swells within;

To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,

And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;

Then back to earth at the end of a day,

Released from the tensions which melted away.

Should my end come while I am in flight,

Whether brightest day or darkest night;

Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,

Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;

For each of us is created to die,

And within me I know, I was born to fly.

Oh dear. I haven't been visiting this forum for quite a long time, and one of the first post I find when coming back is this one... :( Hearing this really makes me sad. I remember John from the time I was active here, and he really stood out as a very pleasant and knowledgeable bloke. It's a great loss not to have him around any more.

Though I see that it's been a year since this happened, this came as a complete surprise to me... My thoughts and prayers go out to John's family, friends and colleagues on this sad anniversary.

I can't believe it's already been a year. It's always sad to lose someone we know. I have a lot of respect for John, although I never met him in person I would have like to have. He brought a lot to this forum and will continue to be missed by all.

Between trips around the US and my internet being down for 10 days, I havent had much time to hit the boards...or my email!

However, I think we allowed an important anniversary to pass without notice. Last month marked 5 years ago (I think) since John's fatal accident. Flingwing was quite the character and I always enjoyed his posts.

Not only should we remember him and his tragic accident, but may we all vow to put safety first every day, even when getting in the cockpit seems easier than driving a car.

I never knew Flingwing personally, but I have read the thread honoring him and many posts he made. I also went to the site that was built to honor him, through all this I felt like I did know him. I feel for his family and friends, he was definitely one who left a void, not only with his family and friends, but the VR community and the helicopter industry as a whole.

Goldy,

I didn't forget. It's on my calendar for every year. The memorial website is still up and running.
