JeepinGuy13 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 would becoming a warrant officer first be more beneficial and get more hoursor is it just like any other military program and from what ive read in the military you dont get as many hours anymore. so would becoming a warrant officer be more hours than just a normal officer? and what about Fixed wing would starting out there be better...i know its cheaper but i also know that you need certain hours in certain helicopter aircrafts. So would fixed wing just be a waste of time? also i am thinking of doing this right out of community college once i get my associates of science degree so what about possible loans or things like that to help make payments seem less painful hahaha!! K-38 Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I hope that you have a great time on your demo flight. I sure did. When you are at the flight school buy a logbook, and have the instructor you fly with that day log the info from your first flight into your new logbook. That will make it official, and that flight time will count towards the rest of your training. Quote

Get a fixed wing PPL, it's much cheaper while learning the basics...e.g., aerodynamics, navigation, communication...and it is more fun. Wait awhile, the cost of flight school is going to go down as helo flight schools go out of business. Those that are left will be hungry. Getting financing for flight school is going to be tough, and expensive if you can get it with a co-signor, for quite awhile. This was posted at JH: From today's WSJ: "Few companies have grown as consistently fast as for-profit colleges such as Corinthian Colleges, Career Education Group, ITT Educational Services and Apollo Group. Enrollments have risen about 14% annually for the past decade. But the popping of the debt bubble has exposed weaknesses in their businesses. For one, the annual reports still rolling in from the companies confirm that private-sector student lenders such as Sallie Mae are pulling back. With most students borrowing to fund their expensive studies, that is a big problem. This high cost leaves many students with heavy debt loads. And while tuition has risen steadily, the portion covered by federal loans has fallen. Private-sector lenders filled the gap -- until recently. The credit crunch has made it more difficult for lenders to repackage student loans and sell them on. The result: Students with poor credit scores are being denied loans; qualifying applicants are paying higher interest rates; and even students with good credit scores are being asked to provide co-signers. Since the extra cost is spread out among students -- many use loans on top of other funds such as savings and grants -- the effects are unclear. While some students may find funds elsewhere, others probably will give up attending college" If those attending for-profit colleges are going to have a hard time getting private loans the folks wanting to go to flight school will find it impossible to get financing. Even with co-signors. Flight schools that have borrowed to buy aircraft and those without a cash cushion are going to go the way of SSH. Going to be a lot of Robbies on the market soon. Quote
NorCalHeliKid Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Fry, FIRST let me thank you for what you have done for my life. When I started my quest to find a flight school that suited me I considered going to the nearest flashiest most promising flight school, which no longer exists. After reading a few modest posts/threads by yourself I decided that closer to home, was not better and decided to continue my search despite my desire to stay close to home. So, thank you for saving my career, my family and my bank account, I owe you more than you could ever know....and Im sure Im not the only man who feels this way.Thank you. Secondly, I have to tell you that there is no ...NO way that flying airplanes first as you stated above is possibly more FUN than flying helicopters. I know you didn't mean that! Quote
ADRidge Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Secondly, I have to tell you that there is no ...NO way that flying airplanes first as you stated above is possibly more FUN than flying helicopters. I know you didn't mean that! Yeah, but how fun is it to look at used a/c and see even a robbie is out of your financial grasp? I was looking at Cessna 152's that I could pretty much pay cash for in three or so years. That's kinda fun..... for fixed wing. Quote

I went down to ft. Campbell and he put me in their Chinook simulator for several hours just after christmas. I did some high alt mountain flying and then navigated to and landed on several ships. He even had me do longline by picking up and moving a vehicle. We went over to the hangar and he gave me a tour of a new Chinook. Edited March 7, 2008 by Fiasco Quote
jehh Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Get a fixed wing PPL, it's much cheaper while learning the basics...e.g., aerodynamics, navigation, communication...and it is more fun. Ok, now we know Fry is smoking something, flying airplanes is not more fun! Wait awhile, the cost of flight school is going to go down as helo flight schools go out of business. Those that are left will be hungry. The cost will go down? You must be joking... Or new to the business, nothing goes down in cost in this business. No matter how hungry I might be, aircraft, fuel, insurance, etc. continue to go up, there is no margin in this business to cut, so the price will only keep going up. Getting financing for flight school is going to be tough, and expensive if you can get it with a co-signor, for quite awhile. That has been true for awhile, nothing new here. Quote
