John90290 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Heading to Brunswick Georgia for about 5 months and want to continue my flight training. I can't seem to find any information or reviews on schools in or around the area. I don't mind heading to Jacksonville, Savannah or Charleston if need be. Thanks, -John Quote

All depends on what agency you're with (how much spare time you'll have). I was there for 5 months too. The BP didn't give us a whole lot of time (or desire) for intense/demanding extracurricular activities. On the weekends, I mostly studied and/or got out of town whenever I could bum a ride (Fernandina Beach, the islands (Jekyll and St. Simons), and Savannah were my favorite destinations). I didn't do any flying while I was there, but I'm thinking JAX is your best bet - it's close and it's big. Have fun and good luck! Brian Edited March 18, 2008 by palmfish Quote
edspilot Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) I would agree with palmfish, you will be very busy. When you are not busy you will want to just "chill-out." It is very dependant on the agency as mentioned the BP is very intense and sturctured. CBP (formally US. Customs) is more relaxed but still the bookwork is not something to slack off on, you can only fail 1 "major" test in your FLETC training and 1 "major" test in the agency specific training. Meaning you can fail one but no more, if you do you will gone by the end of the day of the 2nd test failing. U.S. Marshal, is between BP and CBP as far as structure. U.S. Secret Service, very close to BP but not visiable meaning they do not march to and from everywhere but have "alot" of after hours PT and protection training. How do I know, I spent 21 years with U.S. Customs and taught for two years there. If you are pilot then be prepared to be "teased/razed" by the other ground-pounders (agent types) as being (not really a cop). Yes, I was a pilot, both fixed & rotor. The way FLETC is set up for law enforcement is that every federal agent except FBI & DEA go to FLETC for the first 8 weeks of "federal" law enforcement training. Here you learn the basics that all agents are required to learn. After that graduation you will then start your agency academy where you learn the particulars about the laws you enforce and procedures and whole host of agency stuff. This is usually 7 to 8 weeks too, some more some less. You live in dorm like settings mostly single rooms with baths, meals are good except it does not take long to get tired of it. Pay is good and then excellent as you get 3 to 5 years and great as you get to the GS 12/13 & 14 level. A GS 13 or 14 with what is call law enforcement availability pay (25%) of your base can and do make 110,000.00 to 140,000.00 a year. There is a cap as the max because you can not make more that a junior senator's pay. This cap goes up as raises got up too. Now for CBP or old Customs (with some changes since I retired in 06): Besides the pay, I would say the training is second to none. Simuflight, FlightSafety, Rucker and a host of other smaller companies for specilized issues. Yes, "dunker" training, some survival and even undercover training if you do undercover flying as I did. The interceptor training is great and yes, you can follow a C-172 witrhin 20 feet with a King Air 200 or C-12 through the clouds and they not be able to see you. Believe me I taught several unbelieving pilots this and they became believers. Great flying & lots of fun. Hope this helps, any other questions PM me. edspilot All depends on what agency you're with (how much spare time you'll have). I was there for 5 months too. John90290 Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 Just pm'd you. Thanks for the insight. Given your advice, I figure I'll concentrate on Fletc first and see if I can fit an hour or two in where I can. I found this place in Savannah. If anyone has heard anything, please share. http://www.southeasthelicopter.com/ Quote
