DOORGUNNER Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Hopefully I will be starting my instrument training soon and I have a question for the CFII's out there. Looking at my logbook I see that I only have 3 hours of cross county PIC. I've logged about 30 hours of joyriding since getting my private but have not done any cross countries. I'm not looking for a career change or anything, I'm just having a good time trying to be the safest pilot possible. I know that I will need another 47 hours of cross country PIC to get my instrument. Would I be foolish to believe that just about at the 50 hour cross country PIC mark I will be ready for my checkride. I plan on training at least twice sometimes three times a week. I have the discipline to hit the books and make sure I'm holding up my end of the bargain. I'm just trying to get a rough idea on what I will have to budget for this based on an hour estimate. Thank You, DG Quote
michaelking42 Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Check page 446 of the FAR/AIM. Part 141 Instrument Rating Course. 35 hours of flight training is all you need, but you have to go to a Part 141 school that offers the course. There'll be one near you for sure. Personally I think 35 hours is not enough for anyone, but that's the requirement and you'll save a bunch of $$$$. Mike Quote
heligirl03 Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I got my Instr immediately after PPL with the minimum 40hrs for part 61. I think I had 42hrs actually, b/c I needed a few more PIC x-c hours to get to 50. Nearly every hour of my Instr training was x-c, very convenient. So now I'm hitting the commercial hard, with about 25hrs of PIC and some requirements left to go. I should hit my 100 PIC for my Comm checkride around 170hrs. I'm happy with it. Instr is just a headache for 20hrs, then 20hrs of practice. By the last 5hrs you are totally ready and just doing sim checkrides. I am really glad I did it this way, it's making the Comm stuff seem like a party. Good luck! ~HG03 Quote
DOORGUNNER Posted April 20, 2008 Author Posted April 20, 2008 So it sounds like I'll probably be ready around the 50 hr. XC mark. It would be part 61 with no sim time. HG03, I'll probably send you a pm soon with a couple of questions since you just finished your instrument if you don't mind. Thank You. DG Quote

HelliBoy Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 FAR 61.65 (2)(iv) (iv) For an instrument—helicopter rating, instrument training specific to helicopters on cross-country flight procedures that includes at least one cross-country flight in a helicopter that is performed under IFR, and consists of— (A) A distance of at least 100 nautical miles along airways or ATC-directed routing; ( An instrument approach at each airport; and © Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems; and You dont need 50 hrs pic xc, thats for airplanes only. anytime it says "airplane" move on and look for where it says "helicopter"You only need 40 hrs including the above mentioned long file(a PITA), 35 hrs if your doing it 141. 35 hours in a good 141 course is MORE than enough to be proficient at flying instruments and taking the checkride...its staying proficient thats tough.
