I'm going over my Private PTS getting ready for checkride, and under Special Emphasis Areas the very first one is positive aircraft control. I may sound really dumb, but is there anyone who can give a brief explanation?

I know it's different from positive exchange of controls, but I can't find anything on positive aircraft control. Any help for a newer pilot would be greatly appreciated.

Positive aircraft control means consistently maintaining appropriate control of the aircraft, regardless of the phase of flight or potential distraction of other required tasks.

Got the definition from the FAA Safety Team website (https://www.faasteamreps.com/gslac/ALC/course_content.aspx?cID=36&sID=200&searchresults=true&preview=true)

So, always maintain control and fly the aircraft even when the DPE is throwing emergencies and "what-ifs" at you.

Rule #1: Fly the helicopter.

To all, there is one phase of helo flying that I think pilots "Do Not Have Positive Control"! It has shown up on so many check rides and instructional flights. It is just plain sloppy! Any Guesses? Well, let me state that many, many pilots have demonstrated to me much less than positive aircraft control in picking the helo off of the ground and letting the nose swing 30 to 45 degrees or more, left or right, UNINTENTIONALLY! Not positive control. Same with hovering forward, keep the nose pointed in the direction of movement! This has happened with students on thru CFII's. Get control please, positive control! If you did not want the nose to move from straight ahead, CONTROL it! Some of you have flown with me and you know this is my pet peev. Enough said, pass your check ride! Mike
