? for flight instructors currently instructing

Recommended Posts

As I job hunt around the country I am realizing that I don't have much perspective as to what would be a good average amount of hours flown per month. I was wondering if current instructors would chime in with the amount of hours they fly a month on average, whether it's VFR or IFR training, and if they feel comfortable saying so, what school do they teach at. This would help me get a good idea of what would be reasonable to expect.

Thanks

I don't think you would have time to work two jobs, unless you had a really light schedule.

As for hours of ground, usually it ends up about the same as flight hours per month. If you train under part 61, it might be a lot less.

Just wanted to bump this and see if I got a few more answers. Sounds like the average is about 80 or so.

Quick follow-on question: Are CFI's normally salaried or do you typically get paid based on the hours flown/ground school given?

If it's the latter, how does the percentage work out over the maintenance costs? Is it a 60/40 split between the operator/CFI?

Just curious as I intend to eventually teach once I get my CFI (probably part-time initially but it's a way out in the future) and would be interested to hear what a normal setup is.

Thanks,

Kelly

Paid by the billed hours of flight, and ground given plus a monthly stipend to cover the non-billable hrs. I usually work m-f 8-7, and sat from 12-6. There would be no time for a second job, and the pay is mediocre compared to the responsibility, but the experience, and hours make it all worthwhile. Today I was up in the mountains doing off airport training, and I really enjoyed my work day so there you go my 2 cents.
