Tenacious T Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 As I job hunt around the country I am realizing that I don't have much perspective as to what would be a good average amount of hours flown per month. I was wondering if current instructors would chime in with the amount of hours they fly a month on average, whether it's VFR or IFR training, and if they feel comfortable saying so, what school do they teach at. This would help me get a good idea of what would be reasonable to expect. Thanks Quote

helidave Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Sure why not... I average about 84 hours a month. The most I ever flew in a month was 95 and the least was about 43. I work at a big school in Arizona. Quote
K-38 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Average 60 to 80 hours per month at a busy school in So Cal. Quote
FauxZ Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Same school as helidave, same average of VFR and IFR flying. Lowest month was 50 hours (Dec) best was over 100 (October.) The average sits in the 80's. Quote
mechanicalrevolution Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Ok, so that's your average flight time. How many hours do you get from ground school? Also.. Are you working at another job while your a CFI or does just being a CFI pay the bills? Quote
helidave Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I don't think you would have time to work two jobs, unless you had a really light schedule. As for hours of ground, usually it ends up about the same as flight hours per month. If you train under part 61, it might be a lot less. Quote
Tenacious T Posted May 21, 2008 Author Posted May 21, 2008 Just wanted to bump this and see if I got a few more answers. Sounds like the average is about 80 or so. Quote

Quick follow-on question: Are CFI's normally salaried or do you typically get paid based on the hours flown/ground school given? If it's the latter, how does the percentage work out over the maintenance costs? Is it a 60/40 split between the operator/CFI? Just curious as I intend to eventually teach once I get my CFI (probably part-time initially but it's a way out in the future) and would be interested to hear what a normal setup is. Thanks,Kelly Quote

K-38 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Quick follow-on question: Are CFI's normally salaried or do you typically get paid based on the hours flown/ground school given?Paid by the billed hours of flight, and ground given plus a monthly stipend to cover the non-billable hrs. I usually work m-f 8-7, and sat from 12-6. There would be no time for a second job, and the pay is mediocre compared to the responsibility, but the experience, and hours make it all worthwhile. Today I was up in the mountains doing off airport training, and I really enjoyed my work day so there you go my 2 cents. Quote
