HeloJunkie
Well I finally decided that I have been flying way too much and it was time to complete the second part of my avionics upgrade on 4142G. OK, OK, actually I broke my foot and tore two ligaments so while I will be laid up in a cast for 5 to 8 weeks, I decided NOW was a good time to do the second part of the upgrades :-) I am out to see how much stuff I can cram into an R44 and still fly it (avionics wise that is). This time around the MX20, custom enclosure for the MX20, a Garmin 496, Garmin GDL69 XM system and a few other things are getting installed. If anyone is interested, I posted an article about it here. Check it out and let me know what you think. I will be shooting more pictures and doing some more write up as a way to keep my mind of not being able to fly for a few more weeks yet!! captkirkyota
Nice. What is it you do for a living again??? Seems I may need to rethink my approach to flying via a job where I can fly when and where I want to like you!

PhotoFlyer
And when can we meet so that I can get some career advice? Or you could just give me your job. I'm jealous.
lwalling
Cool stuff. I was thinking about a few of the additions you've done. Looks like a blast! Let us know how you like that massive-screen GPS. Is that a radar altimeter I see as well? What'd that cost you in cash and downtime to install it? You mention some monitoring and alerting hardware to -- can you elaborate what it is and what it cost you? -- You have the massive panel to.. Nice! I think any future ship I order, if an R44, will not have it though my current one does. My ship weighs 1544 dry, and thats just to much with my ass being as big as it is. Thanks. Goldy
Junkie- why did you swap the RPM and altimeter ?? Beautiful cockpit...a lil bit of sensory overload !!
DynamicallyUnstable
Hey Richard it's Sebastian,You are going to LOVE the MX20. We have them coupled with a 480 and it's going to suck to fly without it. Like having a TCAS up here which is AWESOME with all the helicopters in this area all the time.Hope all is well, other than breaking your ankle, ouch! Fly Safe and tell Atillio I said hello! HeloJunkie
Nice. What is it you do for a living again??? Seems I may need to rethink my approach to flying via a job where I can fly when and where I want to like you! I have spent the last 17 years working my way to the top of the food chain at a telecommunications/internet company. I'm the CTO now. It afford me the beat of all worlds since the company likes the fact that I can fly the sales people around, pick up customers, AND I get to play with all the routers and high speed 10 gig circuits :-) Its a good way to go and really helps make money for my real passion - flying!! HeloJunkie
Well, the upgrades look fantastic! But, do I dare ask what happended to you? Well since I doubt anyone will go for the "Dancing with the stars" or "Base jumping in Rio" stories, I should just come clean.... I tore two ligaments and broke a bone in my right foot....moving a desk down the stairs at my house.... I know, I know... Flying Helicopters and airplanes, Scuba diving, motorcycles...and I hurt myself moving a desk.... Now you know why I have been sticking with Base Jumping in Rio :-)

Iwalling - I didn't install a radar altimeter - no room !! (I would have loved to though..) Basically I installed an EDM800 with 6-point EGT and CHT, Fuel Flow, % Horse Power & MAP tied to Garmin 430), GI-106A Nav Head, King KX165A (with 31 memories), Garmin 347 Audio Panel, Garmin GDL69 XM Weather and Stereo module, 406mhz ELT tied to the GPS, Garmin/UpSat MX20, Garmin GPS496, Garmin 330 TIS, Avionics Master Switch, Xpdr ID Switch on the Cyclic, LED strobe replacements for rear strobe and additional LED strobe on belly, PreciseFlight HID replacement lamps (actually waiting on SL from Papa Frank on this one, but I have all the parts) and an ICom ID-800 D-Star equipped ham radio. I do a lot of flying with kids and young adults so I have the XM Stereo from the GDL69 and the XM from the 496 piped to three position rotary knobs in the front and back. This allows the kids in the back to select what they want to hear using the wireless remote slaved to the GDL69 and for us older folks in the front to select what we want to hear on the 496 and the world is a happy place. The 347 has dual music inputs. Music1 is for the front, Music2 is for the rear. With the rotary knows, I have the rear output matched to music2 and the front matched to music1 with both rotary knobs able to select between XM1, XM2 and Aux (Ipod or DVD input on a 3.5mm jack). It will make for peace and quiet during the longer trips. Due to everything I have in my panel, I did not like any of the GPS mounts that I have gotten including the RobinAV mount, in any direction. With that in mind, I am having a mount custom made that will allow maximum visability to the 496 but not restrict visability to any of my instruments. I will post pictures of everything once I have it all done. :-)
HeloJunkie
Junkie- why did you swap the RPM and altimeter ?? Beautiful cockpit...a lil bit of sensory overload !! Hey Goldy - I didn't swap any of the flight instruments...they are exactly as it came from the factory. I only added the GI-106 and the EDM800 to the main panel! On the sensory overload the only thing I can say is that my R44 is still missing a lot of things my Cirrus SR22 has :-) As long as you can view the data and make use of it without allowing it to overwhelm you, I think the more information the better. (IMHO). Edited June 11, 2008 by HeloJunkie
