H2814D Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Last post reference altitudes used seemed pretty standard, between 500-800 agl. Now, at those altitudes, are you using any visual enhancement devices (binoculars)? Which ones and what power magnification? We (LVMPD) use a Canon 12x36 Image Stabilization model, and the Fujinon Stabiscope 12x40 models, one with night vision capabilities now, but are looking to upgrade or improve the Canon models. Anyone use the Canon 18x50 or 15x50 model? Comments or suggestions on any of the other models out there? Thanks in advance. Quote
EAGLE1 Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 We are a bit old fashioned and have stayed away from all the high-priced, fancy Cannon/Fujinon integrated optics systems. We use a standard Fujinon marine grade 7x50 binocular cost about $350. We attach a Ken-Labs gryo to the binos cost $1500. The initial cost is approximately the same however, we have been using the same gyro for 15 years and it has held up fine. The upside is in our high use environment the optics only last a couple of years at most until they are banged up scratched up and no longer serviceable. A new pair of binos for $350 and your back in business. If you want a higher magnification byno for surveillance etc. the gyro swaps over in about 30 seconds. Occasionally the gyro needs service because someone drops it etc. and Ken-Labs refurbs the gyro and sends it back. hope this helps.http://www.ken-lab.com/stabilizers.html#KS4 Quote
H2814D Posted January 4, 2005 Author Report Posted January 4, 2005 Jeff, thanks for the reply. But how are you using that unit attached to a set of binos in a dynamic activity such as searching yards etc. ? It looks bulky. Of course unless I am not understanding how it hooks to the binos. Doesn't the stabilizer unit screw onto the bottom of the binos like a tripod would? Quote
EAGLE1 Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 It is not really as bulky as it sounds. It is a little heavier than normal, but that adds to the stability. PM me and I will send you a photo. Are you a member of ALEA? Quote
