gary-mike Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 (edited) Any body use tuition assistence for flight training? My Base Education office tried telling me I could not because it only covered courses for credit towards a degree. That is when I started schooling him on how Ratings were counted as credit when enrolled in a professional pilot degree program. Needless to say he was clueless. So is it authorized and is there really a bennefit to this since you only get $750 per semester? I was thinking maybe use TA+Ch30 top up for 12 mos worth, then switching to ch33 and get an extra 12 mos of benefits. Not sure this is possible or feasable though. Any thoughts? BTW, Yes I am at least using TA for my general ed courses currently. Edited December 5, 2010 by gary-mike Quote
bqmassey Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 I've been trying to wade through the options for the last couple of months. I can use either GI Bill, and as an active duty Soldier, I also have access to Tuition Assitance. If you have a school nearby that has a degree program that includes flight time, I believe your tuition assistance can go towards it. Using TA with the GI Bill top up might be a good option. I don't have a school near me, so I found a school that has a degree program that includes flight instruction. This school also has a lot of classes online. While I'm still in the military, I'm going to use my tuition assistance to complete all of the classes online that they have available. When I get out in a couple of years, all I'll have left are the flying classes. I'll be able to move there and knock those out with the Post 9/11 GI Bill pretty quickly. The main thing I learned from researching is that it's not beneficial to use the Post-9/11 GI bill while you're still active duty, at least in the Army. If you're out, one "month" is a certain dollar amount. You don't use up a month of benefits until you've used up that much money. While you're still in, though, you use up a month of benefits whether you use a dollar that month or the max. Quote
