Turner Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Anybody have any good products they are using to safely charge/run 12v devices on a 24-28v electrical system in the aircraft? I have seem co-workers use those cheap usb plugs and eventually melt them, or fry their devices. I'm not willing to risk it! I was looking into 24v adapters and step down resistor products, but I wanted to check here first to see if anybody has a good go-to. Thanks! Quote

We’re talking about a simple DC to DC converter. The first thing you need to do, is determine your power requirement. Is this a 12V @ 5A requirement or do you need 12V @ 20A. If you only need 12V @ 5A, you can find one for about $12 or 30A for around $30. You mentioned USB in your post, if that’s the case, you’ll only need about two amps to charge and power cell phones or iPads. In fact, most of your apple type car chargers use an LM7805 regulator or similar electronic component part, selling bulk around .45 cents. You could buy a LM7805 off the shelf for about $1.50 The wiring and connectors can be picked up, fairly cheap, at your local electronic store, hardware store, electronic surplus, or auto store. MLH Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 You can indeed roll your own, but considering the time value of money in rounding up all the parts and building them into an enclosure, you'll likely find that all totaled the cost will be at least double what you can get it for off the shelf as a completed unit. 1 Quote

Turner Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Thank you guys for the replies. I do like to tinker with electronics, but i did decide to go with the pre-fab option on this. I like the simplicity of having it all contained, and not having to worry about anything shorting out and causing an electrical fire in flight. Quote
