Okay quick rundown, I've always wanted to fly helicopters and will soon be starting my lessons. The questions I have are:

1) Job availability: I've been told there is a shortage of hc pilots by some, others say unless your ex-military you have to wait in line. My goal is to go to Alaska as I've been there before and flight is the second most important thing ther because of tourism as well as travel because of the vastness of wilderness

and few roads getting into certain communities. If you really want it, and you really try, can you find a job or will I always end up being told I don't have enough experience, or enough hours, or training on the coptors they don't fly etc.?

Thanks ahead of time and I look forward to hearing back and learning more from you all.

of course it is possible, check out the jobopenings like on verticalreference.com. I have seen some (edit* after I did this post I looked at pilot openings, plenty jobs available in Alaska) jobs in alaska, then you can also see what the requirements are. Good luck

BTW: You dont get such a job with 200 hrs, it is smart to build hours first as an instructor and then I think its possible

Thanks WB!! Appreciate it. I was planning on getting the instructors license. There are 3 programs offered at the place I will be training at. Cost is about 50K. They let you pay as you go so what I'm going to do is work on a fishing boat in AK (thats how I was there before) on a 3 month on/3 month off schedule. On my time off I will be going to soak up every bit of training etc. I can.

Welcome to VR!

I'll post some articles for you that should be helpful in addressing the pilot shortage and another on TEMSCO. I imagine you've already checked them out, but you can never read enough.

TEMSCO- http://helicopterforum.verticalreference.com/helicopterfor...?showtopic=4208

In the second link posted under 'pilot shortage', you should look for vertrefadmin's post (4th one I think) it has a good article attached to it.

Hope this helps,

Thanks rookie! Appreciate the articles. Did you take lessons in Oregon? Just noticed that is where your home is on the bio/pic. I'm over here just West of Boise, we have a couple different flight schools in the area that are both pretty highly touted so I'm excited to get going on it.
