Collective Down! Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Has anyone ever noticed a rougher ride when flying with the wind? I had always thought of wind as just a laminar flowing fluid, but I think the windshear at low altitudes affects helicopters differently than airplanes. I've noticed a slightly rougher ride travelling with the wind, than when I'm going into a direct headwind. Anyone wanna take a stab at why? Could the air be tumbling over itself at low altitudes? Another wind tip... On the ground and in a hover, if the helicopter has a yaw string, it will give you a good idea of where the wind is coming from. For instance, if the string is straight out to the right, that means the relative wind (with respect to the ship) is from the left. At night I pay really close attention to the GPS groundspeed while I'm setting up to land, just to figure out what general direction I need to make my approach. Quote
Vaqueroaero Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Not always! They can also be locked in place, or have turning limitations, to make sure that they don't swing into or over other buildings etc. I think nobody has mentioned trees so far. If you can see the lighter side of the leafes, you're most likely heading downwind Good thread, very helpful for us newbies! OK rain on my parade. How about windmills then? If they're turning, don't they always point into the wind? As far as using livestock goes for wind direction if the wind is strong enough for them to turn their backsides into it I don't want to be in the air. Quote
67november Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I would think watching crows/ravens and raptures soaring you'd get an idea, they use the wind alot to stay aloft without flapping their wings. this coming from a hunter ya notice things like that. Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Yabbut, they tend to go in circles, and it can be hard to tell when they're into the wind. Quote

Gomer Pylot Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Watch out. The rapture may be coming this year. Don't be left behind. Quote
