mechanicalrevolution Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Once I take the ACT and pass I will be registering for fall classes. Seems like I should be in the Broomfield/Denver area once again this winter, this time to start my heli ratings. On another note... Does anyone here have a degree along with their ratings? If so, how much has it helped you throughout your aviation career? And what about Eagle Scout? Do people in aviation recognize it that often? Oh yeah, I'll be attending ROTR in Broomfield. Spoke to one of the instructors in Jan. and it seems like a good place to train. Any current students? Quote
TheLorax Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 I started this summer. I'm doing the aviation administration bachelors degree. I believe that this would give me the upper-hand in the hiring process, as opposed to only having a high school diploma. Quote
Privateer Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 My advice after attending UVSC and having them do my loan disbursment is to read all their policies regarding financial aid, then read them again to ensure you have met every condition. I know at least 4 people who have had problems getting their disbursment over the most minor issues. Quote
mechanicalrevolution Posted May 16, 2008 Author Posted May 16, 2008 Oh cool! Yeh, I'm thinking about BS Professional Pilot or AAS for possible future BA. Unfortunately private loans are the route that I will be having to go :/ I've also been thinking about the WO option but probly won't go that route. Or get a BA and go military so they can help me pay off the loans lol.. Oh, I think that somewhere it said to become a flight officer (at least the in the army) you aren't supposed to have any ratings? Or am I wrong on this? Ah I see. Just like anything I suppose... Do they have a preferred method as to how they disburse the money? I.e. Take your private rating and once that's finished you get like say...15k for the next rating? Quote

So for them to certify a loan you have to be enrolled in at least one flight class and a minimum of 6 units per semester, and before you can get your second disbursement you would of have to completed your first flight class and get enrolled in the next flight class. Hope this helps. Quote

Because it would not make sense to leave people at a point where there like "ok...so how do I get my money for future ratings?". Quote
Guest rotorflyr84 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I'm starting this fall. They changed their lending policy. For alternative loans, you can only get certified through UVU the cost of attendance minus any financial aid awarded. They have a set budget for every student of 13,800 per semester. So figure you get 3,000 in financial aid, you can only request an alternative loan for 10,000 that semester. I'm an out-of-state online student, but I kept asking why they include room and board, and transportation in my budget. Isn't a budget created if needed? Well I don't need those figures to be budgeted into my per semester allowance. Their reason was, well everyone regardless of online or inclass students, still need a place to stay and transportation to get around. I will be checking with some sources inside the Financial Aid department about the new policy change for alternative loans. It used to be they would issue you a check for 20,000 to help with flight training. I'll let you all know what I find out. This new policy seems to leave just enough, or not enough to even get a PPL -H. Quote
mechanicalrevolution Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 Bleh... I could see why they did that though. One time I chatted with an instructor and told me how some people would just get on the degree portion, get all the ratings and jet out without finishing a degree. So in a way it makes sense, but, I hope they realize that helicopter ratings are pretty spendy! Quote

Anyways, how far into the process are you? Are you still going to take courses with UVU this fall? Quote
mechanicalrevolution Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 Seeing as I'm not 21 yet, I will be taking the ACT Mid-June. So eh, it's all dependent on myself doing alright on the ACT.. Which I don't think I'll have a problem with what so ever. Once I get my scores back I will be registering with UVU for the fall semester. Quote

I took mine back in 2001-2002 and got a 21. So far it has been acceptable for admissions. Strive to do better, but that's my situation. Good luck! Let us know what happens when you find out. Quote
nocarsgo Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I should be starting there online for session three of the summer term. Should be easier for me to get money now. Quote
Guest rotorflyr84 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I should be starting there online for session three of the summer term. Should be easier for me to get money now. Do explain your side of the story... Did they change the policy? I was thinking about it today, and it seems as if they don't have any money left for flight training. Here's the details I got in my email from UVU: Budget Detail Budget Component Amount Books and Supplies $2,990.00 Personal Expenses $3,426.00 Room and Board $13,748.00 Tuition and Fees $5,200.00 Transportation $2,236.00 Total: $27,600.00 The total is for Fall and Spring. Now, they told me they will only certify the alternative loan for the amount of the total minus any federal aid recieved. So, basically you're just paying for the college portion, but where is the money for flight training?? Maybe I've got this wrong. What's your take? Quote

I am taking two GE classes and AVSC 1010, and AVSC 2150 for my first semester. That will put me at 15 credits and I need 12 to be a full time student with the VA. From what I was told, some people use the GI Bill for school classes then cancel it when it is time for flight school and use it for that portion. Full time student in class gets around 1250 a month. When you use it for flight school they provide 60 percent and you pay the other 40. Does anyone know the best way to go if you are using the GI Bill for veterans benefits? I am confusing myself with all of this. lol Do I need to apply for any additional loans? I am deployed in Iraq until Jan. 09 and am trying to knock out as many of the online classes as I can. Any recommendations of how to go about this? I won't be able to actually attend a flight school until Jan 09. Do I have to worry about time restrictions on the school? Again I am brand new to this and really am a little lost. I have no prior college just prior service. I posted another topic in a different section, but this is on the lines of what I am asking about. I tried to talk to the school about certain questions, but with a delay on the phone I really can't get all the anwers I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote
