Little Red 22 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Has anyone added LSA airplane privileges to their PVT helicopter certificate? My understanding is that it is NOT the same as the add-on rating of PVT helicopter to PVT ASEL, and that you only need to fly with 2 different instructors, and there is no minimum training specified. I have my CPL helicopter, and am working on my Sport Pilot ASEL CFI. My rotorhead friends want to know if I can train and endorse them to fly LSA airplanes. Thanks!Susie Quote
Mikemv Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 (edited) Susie, You need to read & study 14 CFR Part 61, Sub-part J & K. Someone is misleading you about the two instructors. That is for a proficiency check and not a rating. Sport pilots must comply with the requirements of Sub-part J and Sport Pilot CFIs Sub-part K. For sport pilots, there is a Rotorcraft Gyroplane rating but no helicopter rating. Sub J lists the requirements for training, experience, knowledge testing and practical test for categories and privileges, like Airplane, single engine, land. Your Sport Pilot CFi will be in an individual category until you add others as acquired. (61.313) If you were a CFI you could meet the requirements of Sub K and accomplish a proficiency check to add Sport Pilot CFI, training with one CFI and completing the PC with another. (61.411) You should meet with an ASI about this at your local FSDO. I suggest that you contact the Sport Pilot Directorate in Oklahoma City directly as most FSDOs are lost when it comes to Sport Pilot certificates. You may want to talk with Paul at the link below. He is a SP DPE. http://sportpilottraining.sportaviationcenter.com/pilot-training-cost/ Mike Edited August 4, 2014 by Mikemv Quote
Little Red 22 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 Mike, I've been working on this scenario with a couple CFI's, including a Master CFI. They came to the same conclusion as me that the PVT Helicopter to Sport Pilot Airplane was a 2 step ride. Can you tell me the correct chapter and verse of Part 61?? It's not clear at all. Thanks! Thanks!Susie, Can the CFIs you are working with show you where it states this is a path you can take??????? Sport Pilot is removed from the Certification process as it stands alone being created some time afterwards. You use an 8710-11 for applications, not an 8710 like other certificates. I believe that for someone to attain a single engine airplane sport pilot certificate they would have to meet all of the requirements of 61 Sub part J and you must both hold that rating ( or higher in ASEL) and then meet the reqs. of Sub part K to be CFI-SP. That training must be given by a CFI-A (Sub part H) or CFI-SP (Sup part K) Limitations while flying as a Sport Pilot, even if holding a PVT. rating or higher in other categories, must be adhered to! Get FAA OKC to clarify all of this as your applicants 8710-11 will get kicked back. Do you have a SP DME to give practical tests? Are you thinking the FAA will issue the SP rating from a submitted 8710-11? Paul should be able to tell you who to call at FAA OKC. Best Wishes, Mike PS. Do you have a SP CFI or CFI-A that is really going to sign off a RH pilot with 15 hours dual & 5 hours solo in a LSA or are you thinking they can do this in less time not meeting requirements? While holding a CFI-RH and applying for a CFI-SP in 2010, my path was to complete the requirements of Sub part K (I held CASMELI at the time & expired CFI-A) and then completed the Proficiency check as per the Sport Pilot PTS because OKC stated I could not hold two CFI certificates. My CFI-SP was an endorsement in my log book and valid as such. Subsequently, the FAA chose to list CFI-SP on my Sub part H certificate. Read the title in Sub part H, it states other than CFI-SP. Little Red 22 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 Here is the response from Paul Hamilton and he agrees that a PVT-Helicopter pilot can indeed get checked out and fly an LSA airplane, or other LSA aircraft, with the restriction of operating under Sport Pilot Rules (Part 61 Subpart J) simply by getting the training and completing 2 flights with appropriately rated CFI's, getting their logbook endorsed, and submitting form 8711. See response and links below. Suzie,Hard to believe HUH!Yes 61.303 a 1 iii defines it clearly.I have the process athttp://sportpilottraining.sportaviationcenter.com/add-category-pilot-certificate/Using this he will only be able to Fly LSA with the sport pilot limitations.Call me if you have further questions.Best,Paul Hamilton CFI, DPEmobile 775.772.8232Aviation Training: www.SportAviationCenter.comMedia Company: www.adventure-productions.comOnline Store: www.Pilot-Stores.comSimulator Pilot Training: www.SimulatorFlightTraining.comTrike/accessory sales: www.AviationTrikesForSale.comWeather To Fly ®: www.WeatherToFly.comLake Tahoe Flights: www.HangGlidingTahoe.comOn Line videos: www.youtube.com/PaulDHamiltonOn Line Training: www.Aviation-eLearning.com Quote
Mikemv Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) Susie, Paul is the man on this stuff, that is why I told you to contact him. The Proficiency check is completed according to the PC listed in the Sport Pilot PTS and the 8710-11 has the sign offs and is sent to the FAA. Make copies of course for the pilot and CFI records. Now it is about when the CFI feels it is the right proficiency level for solo. Taxiing is usually the difficult part, navigating on the airport and not having a runway incursion. What LSA are you flying? Get some training on the Rotax 912 series engines in many of them. NOTE: do not turn the prop backwards ever as it will cavitate the lubrication system (then requires maintenace prior to flight). LSAs can be high performance aircraft (believe it or not)? Some have glass, synth. vision and auto pilots. If I can help in any way, mikefranz@embarqmail.com is a better means of commo for us to use. Little Red 22 Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 I have confirmation from the FAA regarding PVT Helicopter to Sport Pilot-Airplane. I talked to Mike See at AFS-610, which is the FAA Regulatory Support Division-Light Sport Aviation Branch. He can be reached at 405-954-7591 in Oklahoma City. The process is described in 14 Part 61.321. Make sure the applicant has never been denied a medical certificate if transitioning from PVT to Sport Pilot Rules. There is no specified number of hours of training required, and there is also no time limit specified between the endorsement of the1st recommending CFI and the 2nd CFI who performs the proficiency check. FAA form 8710-11 must be submitted within 10 days. Quote
