Fred0311 Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Anyone ever have a helicopter kill their headset? I've had one new and one old headset quit on me in two weeks both in the same aircraft. Any idea what could cause this? Quote
r22butters Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 When I was up at Jerry Trimble's a few years ago he was having that problem with one of the 22's (so I used one of their headsets instead of my Zulu). Don't remember what the issue was though,...sorry. Quote
avbug Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Coiled headset cables are popular for a lot of users, especially on helmets. I've seen a lot more of those fail, and fail with some regularity, than straight cords. You didn't state what the problem was with your headset, but it's one potential. Quote
Fred0311 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 They're both coiled and one had the left ear fail and one had both fail. Quote
avbug Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 That doesn't really state what the problem was with the headset (broken wire, failed speaker, failed cord, etc), but a failed coiled cord would account for both; they typically fail close to the helmet/headset, or close to the plug. Â What headsets are you using? What microphone? Quote
Fred0311 Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 Mine was a light speed Zulu 2 the other was an off brand I borrowed from mx. I haven't taken them apart to figure what in them failed. I'll leave that to light speed when I have the chance to send them in. I'm trying to figure out though if it could be a problem with the aircraft causing it since it happened twice in a short period of time. Quote
Guest pokey Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 i'm pretty sure, that if one aircraft in particular keeps 'killing' headsets, (disregarding the obvious, such as cord routed out the door--resulting in broken cord, OR plug being on tailboom--resulting in cord being pulled out of headset); it could be a possibility that inside the radio itself, something has run a muck & has changed the impedance output (ohms). I don't know that much about it, may want to ask about having the radio checked in that particular ship. Quote
Fred0311 Posted October 12, 2016 Author Posted October 12, 2016 Well I ended up writing it up because I couldn't receive on any of my 3 radios and the intercom is useless. My guess is it's in the mixing box. Quote
