Witch Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 OK, so I've decided on a flight school. How do I pay for it? The instructor suggested Pilot Finance Inc, Salliemae, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, and Utah Valley State College. I'm thinking UVSC might be the better way to go, but I'd appreciate other suggestions. Also, looking at some scholarships he suggested, it looks as if they're rare for helo pilots. Any suggestions there either? Can I tell ya'll of my SSH experience? Show me the money! Later Quote
tomw Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Yes, I would certainly like to hear you SSH experience, but it might be better to post it in one of the already existing SSH threads. Quote
rotoflightmaniac1 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 OK, so I've decided on a flight school. How do I pay for it? Generally, someone who has done the research on their flight school would know well how they intend on paying for it but not always, no offense. I just hope you spent plenty of time researching for a school becase from your post it would not seem like it. The options you listed are the most popular out there, there might be a few others but in general most people use those. I would strongly suggest saving as much as you can yourself before you go, interest kills and so does borrowing alot of money. Hope this helps. Jake Quote
Huey Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I sold a kidney. My CG is a little to the left now... Quote
Wesp Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 You have to sort out the money first. Basically you know you need $50,000 so arrange that first. By the way I selected a Porsche Carrera 4S (or whatever), now I need the money! Same thing. Quote
Witch Posted April 1, 2006 Author Posted April 1, 2006 Well, the school is a small one in a smaller town that the one in which I live. I figured the rates were reasonable, the weather is generally more mild than where I live, they have graduated many-o-pilots, and it's only 35 miles from my house-24 from work. As for financing, this is where things get difficult for me. Trying to figure out the loans, rates, terms... It makea no sensea. And it seems that one needs to be in a college to get these funds. Confusing. I'm wondering if I ought to just get a home equity loan and be done with it. The thing there is that I'd rather use that for the home instead of helos. It might be an option though. As for the SSH thing, I went for an enrollment interview. The interviewer said they don't like fixed-wings there. I have 48 hrs private. Also, my wife couldn't came to the interview like they had requested. Strike two. Then he said I wasn't enthusiastic. He didn't want me to enroll, and said denied. Oh well. Anyway, I'll look for financing the best I can, but if anybody has suggestions, I'm open. And no selling of body parts...unless the price is right. Later Quote
Witch Posted April 2, 2006 Author Posted April 2, 2006 What city was the SSH at?Salem, Oregon. McNeary field to be exact. My chicken likes peaches. Don't ask. Anyway, this is about getting money for school. I could care less about SSH. They didn't want me, so be it. So, where did you guys get your money??????? Later Quote
West Coaster Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Three words my friend... Line of Credit. Far easier than a actual loan to get and to pay off. Quote
fry Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 As for financing, this is where things get difficult for me. Trying to figure out the loans, rates, terms... It makea no sensea. Student Loan Xpress (http://www.studentloanxpress.com/student-loan-products/private-student-loan.html) is used by many schools and UVSC. The interest rate is nearly 10% so a $50k loan over 20 years is going to run $480 a month ($115k total cost for a CFI cert). A home equity loan at, say, 6% would run about $360 a month ($86k over 20 years) but the interest would be deductible. That would reduce the effective interest rate to about 4.5% (at a 25% federal and 0% state marginal income tax rates). It's a big investment. Quote
Witch Posted April 2, 2006 Author Posted April 2, 2006 Home loan...hmmmmm I'll look into that later this week. I guess my bank might be able to give me insight on the workings of that. Thanks guy. Later Quote

Waaaaayyyyyyy toooooo much of a commute for this old fart on a Kawi enduro. I can handle 35 miles, not 75. Now if I still had my 650??? Thanks for the info.
