Flying Bull Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 The preferred PoliceHelo - well, what a question. It really depends, what you have/want to do with it.Due to widespread urban areas and a couple of accidents with single engine helicopters - police in germany is using twins. And I think, that´s a good choice - regardeless of the costs. The BO 105 did a good job for over 20 years by now.The helicopter beeing very manouverable and gives a very good sight for the pilot and copilot.Fitting FLIR and SX16 and an additional Operator, the Bo comes to it´s limits, especially in summer. So we looked around and decided to refit our BK 117´s with a Wescam-FLIR-System and the SX 16.This is "the police helicopter" for us. Evenso as a pilot, you can´t see as much as in the BO 105. The available power is really great. The BK 117 is also very responsive and fun to fly. Additionally its fitted with the things, which reduce the workoad, especially at night, such as autopilot, Moving Map and so on.For transport-purposes we run also a EC 155 - which is a state of the art, very fast helicopter - but only suitable for a minor range of police work. The daily work with searches, FLIR-operatins, photographs and so on is really well done with the BK 117 Quote
