Rob Lyman Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 OK, so this movie is evidently old (2002), but I just saw it for the first time. It was showing on Comcast INHD. I watched it in HD on my 50" TV and it was awesome. You could see the bolts on the rotor head of the logging helicopter and nearly count the pine needles on the trees being harvested. I want to buy the DVD, but I am afraid I will be disappointed in the quality. I may have to wait to see if it comes out in HD-DVD or BlueRay. Quote
West Coaster Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 A buddy lent me his DVD and the quality was fantastic. Doubt it compared to the original IMAX experience, but still stunning photography none the less. Quote
mrchuckf Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 Rob I ordered this DVD from Amazon. You will not be dissapointed. Matter of fact, Im going to watch it again now. Chuck Quote
rotor91 Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 Rob, I bought the DVD at www.deepdiscountdvd.com ($9.95/free shipping). The quality is GREAT, and you're right, it is an awesome DVD. Our company did the dailies on this show, and I missed the screening at the IMAX theatre's, but just found it a couple of months ago. ALL pilots should have this DVD, it's done really well! And no....I don't get a cut of the sales on this!! Rob Quote
Grant B Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Just saw `Straight Up: Helicopters in Action' today. Fine documentary. Lovely photography. Thanks for the recommendation. Quote
JordanP Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I saw the IMAX while on vacation in germany. I couldn't understand the narrator but it was awesome on such a big screen. The DVD is great too but it just doesn't compare to the IMAX. Quote
Flyfisherman79 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I finally got off my @$$ and ordered Straight-up and the R22 Auto movie. Straight-up is good for motivation (for me at least). Much respect for the fella strapping himself to hundreds of thousands of volts! I WILL fly a 500 some day, but I dont know if I want it "energized" quite like that. Blackhawks and bad guys are always cool as well. The R22 auto flick....I find it useful. I should have ordered it sooner, as I was just starting autos at school when it came out. So yea, the couple of Helo movies are worth the coin, IMO. Quote
Ace Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Wow! Just got my copy in the mail and watched the first part. Very nice! If I had seen this a long time ago, I might have looked into flying Heli's alot sooner! Great quality on my 50" Sony but i have a cheap upconverter as well. Did look a little grainy onthe lower resolution, but on 1080i it was awesome! I too reccommend this to all who are lookinginto this as a career, or those already into the field of flying. Got me hooked all over again! Quote
Witch Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I saw it for free... I got it at the library. Looks cool on my computer monitor-I have no DVD for the TV. Quote
Ryan F. Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Netflix has it too if anyone uses that service. Quote
