blkhawk16 Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Hello Everyone, I was just wandering if anyone has been to or checked out Rainbow Air Academy at Long Beach Airport. They have a program that sounds almost too good to be true. The program takes you from 0 hours to CFII in both airplane and helicopter for $60,000. My goal is to be a professional helicopter pilot but it would also be nice to have airplane ratings as well. I would also like to know what would be the best place to do my flight training. I am currently considering Los Angeles Helicopters, Universal Air Academy, and Twin Air. I have already been to all three and I am having a hard time deciding. If anyone can share any knowledge about these flight schools or give any advice it would be greatly apreciated. -Thank-you Quote
Guest rookie101 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I don't mean to be rude (and I'm sorry if i come off that way), but a simple search would've brought this up http://helicopterforum.verticalreference.com/helicopterfor...bow+Air+Academy Last post talks about the very school your asking about. I suggest you e-mail or PM that guy (your better off e-mailing him). Quote
jehh Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 It can be done, if you get the flight hours just right... Here is the problem with that idea, if your goal is to be a professional helicopter pilot... You will end up with about 85 helicopter hours going that route, and you need 200 helicopter hours to instruct in the R-22. How are you going to get the rest of that time? If you want to be a professional helicopter pilot, there really are few options other than paying for the first 200 helicopter hours. It can be done, and I know people who have begged and borrowed hours here and there, but those are the exceptions, not the rule. Quote
Guest rookie101 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 and you need 200 helicopter hours to instruct in the R-22. Another 100 if that school has Pathfinder insurance. Quote
blkhawk16 Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 Thank-you all for your responses, they were all very helpful. I will definitely stick to helicopter training Quote
bell206b Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Well let's do the math: 200 hrs @ $225 = 45,000 + written @ $70 + medical @ $80 + books/headset/mics BS @ approx $600 + ground tng (for normal students) @ 80 hrs x $35= $2800 + 4 checkrides @ 400 = $1600. So boys and girls what does that add up to: $45,000 70 80 600 2,800 1,600 and what doe we get: conservative $50,150If you are paying 60K for 50 K training you are be taken for!!Like the man says check out AZ: Gold Coast, Guidance, Quantum, Universal for starters Quote
mechanic Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Hi, 60k sounds high but it depends on what all fixed courses are included? I was checking into doing a Pro fixed wing course years ago. I found it was less than 10k difference between Fixed and Heli training. By the time you get your fixed ratings, All of them, it adds up. SEL-PPL, IFR, High Perf, Complex, SEL-CPL, SEL-CFI/II, ME, MEI.... get the point...you will have 250 hrs TT under Part 61 and under Part 141 min of 190 hrs TT. I don't know if you can finish all of the ones I listed in 190 hrs? And of course you don't have to get all of these ratings. Thats just the way I was going to go if I decided to go the fixed route. Total Cost: $59,995 for 750 hours of flight time in 16 to 18 months and includes: Dual/solo flight time for a total of 315 hours Instructor time Classroom time Simulator time Books Fuel Renter's insurance VIP Club membership for the duration of the course FAA Examiner fees Medical exam fees The following FAA licenses and ratings: PPL-A/H IR-A/H ME-A CPL-A/H CFI-A/H CFII-A/H MEI-A Airport pick-up/drop-off All Student Visa Fees and taxes Student orientation and assistance throughout the course 100 hours of turbine Helicpter time building Resume preparation assistance Is this the course you were looking at??????? Goldy Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Blackhawk-TwinAir is not a 141 school if that is what you need. Personally, I enjoy flying there, I like Van Nuys airport and ATC, and you can't find better rates on the R 22. It also has the Bell 47, which is just plain fun to fly, and the 206 is great to look at and dream. Just my 2 cents, I fly out of there a couple times a month. Don't know who you talked to as a CFI, but e mail me if you have any questions..I fly out of there...I dont work there. Goldy Quote
