That is what it takes in law enforcement, it is not a sign-up to be a helicopter pilot line of work (unless you're contracted as a pilot from a helicopter company). Quote

I did 8 years on the street as a street cop before I made the aviation unit. I had to get my fixed wing instrument and commercial on my own, but the department paid for my helicopter commercial add-on. Anyone who would like a career flying for a law enforcement agency should be aware that the flying probably won't happen for a year or more (probably way more than a year) once they make it into the department. But if that is what you want to do, I highly recommend it. You just have to be willing to 'do your time' before you can get there. Jeff Quote
