wild_blue Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Hi,I am hoping to apply for WOFT in a few years but theres something I need to know...........are near-sighted people allowed to be pilots?? Some people I have talked to say yes and others say no and its driving me crazy!! I am 17 and I've only had to wear glasses/contacts since I was 15 so my vision isn't really that bad but since I'm near-sighted that tends to make things a littile more difficult when it comes to being a military pilot. Any input will be greatly appreciated! 1 Quote

Wild, Check out this similar Thread. I had some similar questions (and some that don't apply to you). Pay special attention to the links provided by Klas. Basically the Army will allow vision of 20/50 correctable to 20/20 with glasses. They now also allow some laser eye surgery. Just had mine about a month-and-a-half ago and I'm already seeing 20/15 and the doctor says it should get even better (I told them what I wanted to do and they specifically over-corrected my vision to help me out). While I'm just getting started in the WOFT process, one thing I would suggest is to do your homework and try to improve yourself (and your resume) as much as possible to help make you a viable candidate for WOFT before you apply. I've heard numbers like only 5-10% of civilians get accepted. That means you have to make yourself as competative as possible. Best of luck and plan ahead, -V5 Quote
wild_blue Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 Thanks V5,That info was very helpful! And by the way,I wasn't planning on applying as a civilian,I'm going to apply after I've been enlisted for awhile so that should help a littile. Quote

But nevertheless, there are still things you can do while you are serving to put yourself above the other applicants; for example, taking leadership courses, etc. Best of luck AND PLAN AHEAD! -V5 Quote
