Hi,

I am hoping to apply for WOFT in a few years but theres something I need to know...........are near-sighted people allowed to be pilots?? Some people I have talked to say yes and others say no and its driving me crazy!!

I am 17 and I've only had to wear glasses/contacts since I was 15 so my vision isn't really that bad but since I'm near-sighted that tends to make things a littile more difficult when it comes to being a military pilot.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Wild,

Check out this similar Thread. I had some similar questions (and some that don't apply to you). Pay special attention to the links provided by Klas. Basically the Army will allow vision of 20/50 correctable to 20/20 with glasses. They now also allow some laser eye surgery. Just had mine about a month-and-a-half ago and I'm already seeing 20/15 and the doctor says it should get even better (I told them what I wanted to do and they specifically over-corrected my vision to help me out). While I'm just getting started in the WOFT process, one thing I would suggest is to do your homework and try to improve yourself (and your resume) as much as possible to help make you a viable candidate for WOFT before you apply. I've heard numbers like only 5-10% of civilians get accepted. That means you have to make yourself as competative as possible.

Best of luck and plan ahead,

Thanks V5,

That info was very helpful!

And by the way,I wasn't planning on applying as a civilian,I'm going to apply after I've been enlisted for awhile so that should help a littile.

No problem,

And congratulations on enlisting. But nevertheless, there are still things you can do while you are serving to put yourself above the other applicants; for example, taking leadership courses, etc.

Best of luck AND PLAN AHEAD!
