Parts after retirement

Recommended Posts

This may be a silly question from a newbie, but what happens to all the life-limited components after they reach their life-limits? Thrown in the trash bin with yesterday's newspaper, sent back to the mfr. for overhaul, melted down and recycled into beer cans? I suppose it would depend on the part, what can be "recycled" in some way, and what happens to the stuff that can't?

Legally, they are supposed to be destroyed. This prevents illicit sale and use on other aircraft.

"legally" as per the type certificate, they are to be retired, altho some manufacturers may go further & have specific "destruction" instructions. (which i think is a GREAT idea) & IF their maintenance manual is drawn into the "legality" by reference from the type certificate?--then it becomes CFR also (legal). I have seen some manuals that say to mark the part in a specific location as "unairworthy" or such. BUT? We all know that the whole world isnt made up of honest people.

Buying used parts is sure a can of worms, not sure i even want to go there.

One company takes the timed out turbines and puts them in custom turbine motorcycles...Jay Leno has one of them. Little slow out of the gate for me...and you idle at the red light at 70% RPM !!!
