Actually, rotors recommended that I apply for a 70k loan, so I did. Sallie Mae said that due to insufficient credit history that they would approve me for up to 12k. Options listed were apply for a lesser amount up to 12k inside of 20 days, or reapply with a cosigner within 20 days.

As far as UVSC goes, I'm looking at their global aviation degree now, and I'm not sure which is appropriate toward being a helicopter pilot. (Their professional pilot bachelors has requirements such as Ground: Multi-Engine and Flight: Multi-Engine.)

I plan to contact them requesting more information on what would be appropriate for what I would like to accomplish, hopefully I hear back from them soon.

I may be wrong but im pretty sure its either an emphasis on professional pilot or administration. Im taking the professional pilot emphasis and its all about fixed wing and general aviation law and physiology. You do not learn much at all, if anything, about helicopters from what ive seen so far. However I do hope it changes because I just think helos are much more exciting personaly.

Well, got in touch with UVSC, they did say that it was all emphasized towards fixed wing. However the AAS and the BS degrees are applicable towards helicopter piloting too. (Also depends what electives you take).

On the downside, due to the way the FAFSA requirements are, even though I file myself as my own dependent on taxes, and live completely independently of my parents, because I'm not over 23, and not married, my parents income must be filed with my FAFSA. This means, I don't qualify for any financial aid whatsoever.

End result, I can't finance all of my flight training by utilizing UVSC and financial aid until the 2010 fall semester. I can't finance all of my flight training by utilizing independent loans because I haven't built up enough credit history yet. So, I guess I'll start saving on my own and stockpiling into a savings account, and do what I can to work on my credit. With any luck, I'll persevere and just save up to where I can do it on my own without any financial aid at all. Since I'm not being offered it, why waste money on interest if I can wait a little longer and do it on my own.

One more thing I forgot. I can't do an Army WOFT packet because my uncorrected eyesight is worse than 20/40, and I'm unwilling to undertake LASIK on the offchance that it grounds me permenantly.

Hey man, well now the LASIK thing and the military is something that I can comment on with experience. You're afraid it will ground you permanetly? Why? LASIK is like anything else, you get what you pay for. The military could care less about LASIK right now, excluding the Air Force. Most people will say you need a waiver, but that's untrue at this point.

I care, because not only does going the military route make me have to risk possible eye damage which would ground me permenently (albeit at a low percentage), I also have to risk my life by serving for 6 years. I'd rather spend 10 years civilian to work my way to flying on my own, than go that route.

More power to you! Work hard and save. You'll be in a much better position than if you go into debt. Or go in the army when you really don't want to.

Persevere. We'll cheer you on!
