xcop2copter Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Hi, I'm just beginning my research on flight schools in my area (southeast kansas), not much to choose from! I'm wondering if anybody has any thoughts/experience with Shreib-Air Kansas Copters in Augusta Kansas, or Executive Helicopter Solutions or J Sherwood Flight Training both located in Olathe, KS. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Silver State is closer, located in Tulsa, but heard way too much negative about them and not willing to pay $$$ all up front..thanks Quote
copter doctor Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Schreib-Air Kansas Copters training can be done undr part 61 or 141. The instructors are good people and work with you on scheduling your training. If you need more info, you can look at the web site www.2copter.com or call 316-733-0109. Quote
FlyingDodo Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Executive Helicopter Solutions and J. Sherwood Flight Training are actually the same place, located at Johnson County Executive Airport. I'm from KC and I had my original introductory flight with Jessie Sherwood. That was roughly three years ago and at that time it was a one-man show with an R22 and R44. I know he has a second R22 now, but I'm not sure if he has other instructors as well. It would be best just to call him directly or email him from his website. From the brief time I spent with him I can say that he's an excellent instructor who's definately most at home in the cockpit. The airport is also in a really good area for gaining experience in dealing with controlled and busy airspace. Olathe's about a 2 hour drive from the Pittsburg area... Unless you're in Baxter Springs or Coffeyville it's almost the same time as to Tulsa. There's also Midwest Helicopter in St. Louis. I've recently heard of a school out in Liberal, KS as well, but I don't remember the name. Seems like there should be one in Wichita or Springfield/Branson area. Good luck!! Quote
Gerhardt Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Jess got me my PPL helicopter add-on. By far the best CFI I've ever had. He does fixed-wing training at KCAC when he's not working with his helicopter students on the other side of the runway. Quote

J Sherwood owns the place but I'm actually training with a guy named John. It's a smaller school, but I think that gives them a little more flexibility with scheduling, etc. I pay as I go, buying R22 time in blocks of 10 hours (247/hr) and do the instruction separately. ($30/hr) They are Part 61 Edited September 11, 2007 by nicepants Quote
Tweedles Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I had a great training experience at Schreib-Air / Kansas Copters. I could only fly part-time so it took me 2 years to get my PPL-H. Even so, I was always treated well. They were very flexible and went the extra mile for me. I really appreciated their professionalism, especially when I flew elsewhere and realized their attention to detail and attitude towards safety weren't universal. BTW, I am not at all affiliated with them, just very pleased with their training. Tweedles Quote
Gerhardt Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Nicepants, I didn't notice the brown/gold helicopter in the background on your avatar. I worked with John a little, a nice guy. He's a SSH graduate and will tell you that he got the best training available, albeit a bit pricey. We used to go out to the small uncontrolled airport SW of New Century, I forget the name. You'll really enjoy your training with him. PM me if you have any questions. Quote
