Bootcamp Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 The regulation states: No person may act as pilot in command of a civil aircraft under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR flight unless that person holds: (1) The appropriate aircraft category, class, type (if required), and instrument rating on that person's pilot certificate for any airplane, helicopter, or powered-lift being flown. The regulation does not state that the pilot must hold the appropriate instrument rating for the category, class, and type (if required). In other words, if a pilot holds an instrument rating in helicopters and has private privileges in airplane-single-engine-land (ASEL), would he/she be allowed to fly under IFR in ASEL without getting an additional instrument rating in ASEL? No. "and instrument rating on that person's pilot certificate for any airplane, helicopter, or powered-lift being flown." If you want to fly it IMC/IFR, you have to have an instrument rating in it. Goldy Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Robert- its a good thing you have a C in your name, I dont like the other guy much. When else other than IMC do you need an instrument rating? Quote
joker Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 When is an instrument rating required? To fly in weather less than VMC. (Alredy mentioned.) Any time you wish to exercise the privilages of an instrument instructor. Presumably any time you are a DPE or Inspector giving a practical test for an instrument rating. (Although I haven't looked this up.) To file an IFR flight plan. To apply for an ATPL. (Hey, didn't someone ask about this not too long ago? I may have given the wrong answer before.) Sign off an Instrument Proficiency Check as per. 61.57 That's all I can think of. Anymore? Joker Quote

Jeff Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Robert- its a good thing you have a C in your name, I dont like the other guy much. When else other than IMC do you need an instrument rating? You need an instrument rating in an airplane at night under SVFR. I'm not sure about a helicopter, though. I don't feel like sorting through regs right now. Jeff Quote
Goldy Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 and anytime you enter A class airspace (18000 ft msl to 60000ft msl) although this would not normaly if ever happen in a helicopter That's the answer I was looking for !!! You get two brownie points. Goldy Quote
