skypilot011 Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Does anyone have any information about the school at spring texas called Helicopter services? Have you been a former or current student? How many ships do they have? What kind of reputation do they have? thanks all. Quote
TheLorax Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 3 helicopters; 2 are beta 2s, 1 is a beta. been around for like 27 years. i left them for boatpix. it's a good company, my lease ran out but it wasn't a great company, hence the moving out. things move a little slow there. sho is a great chief pilot. DWH is ok to fly at.. kind of sheltered but whatever. check it out! im sure mike will convince you to train there.. Quote
skypilot011 Posted December 25, 2007 Author Posted December 25, 2007 Thanks, for the info! has anybody else had any contact with them? Quote
skypilot011 Posted December 25, 2007 Author Posted December 25, 2007 Lorax, what do you mean by "things move a little slow there" in regards to heli services. Do they have a good student base? Do they have good marketing? Or do the cfi's get enough time there? Quote
HeliMott Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 What the Lorax means is that they are a good school if you have to have a part 141 school. The down side of a part 141 school is that you must adhere to their schedule. For example I have 2 students who left HSI for HelicopterAcademy, they had both been flying for about 4 months and only gotten 40 hours. the first weekend I flew with one of the students he received 24 hours. The first weekend I flew with the second he got 14 hours, that’s just in our off season. Part 141 schools tend to be slower than part 61 schools. Part 141 schools are good for foreign students with learning visa's or military vets with GI bill or something close. The first thing I found with the two students that came to me from HSI is that lacked any real world experience. They had never spoken to another tower or communicated at a non-towered airport. The next things that I found are that even after 40 hours the helicopter seemed to still be a bit foreign to them. Both students complained about scheduling time to fly, and length of time to obtain any licenses or ratings. Word on the street is that HSI is selling or going out of business. Finally I have seen an enormous amount of students leaving or moving to other schools, Lorax is one of them... I know they have been in the Houston area for a while, but I would suggest looking at some part 61 schools in the area Quote
TheLorax Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 marketing is slim to none. students have been leaving lately in small groups for other companies. cfi's get good time. Quote

skypilot011 Posted December 27, 2007 Author Posted December 27, 2007 Thanks for the comments, I am already cfii rated and looking for a good employer and a well run school. Quote
clay Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 (edited) Mr. Woods, I fly here in the houston area, and i've read your posts on the fox website commenting to the pilot of skyfox, telling him you offer the ONLY flight school in Houston Tx, and can he give you some help getting your advertisement out there. HSI is a good school for some people, others its not a good school for. Edited December 27, 2007 by clay Quote
HeliMott Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 (edited) Clay, I'm so happy you have brought that up. After further review of the area I have seen that we are not the only flight school in Houston and since have found that we are the only R-22 Flight school south of I-10.... SO to you and many others, including those other schools in Houston, My apoligies. However I must point out that HSI and Silverstate are at DWH, which is Spring, TX not Houston, TX. Diffrent cities and diffrent municipalities... Concerning HSI, I was mearly commenting on what I have seen from the students I have recieved from that school. Not trashing the school Let Me be clear in saying HSI is a good part 141 school, I myself first looked into HSI for a flight school when I was learning. The reason I didn't attend HSI is because it is over a hour and a half away from my house. HSI has been in business for quite awhile and have a decent reputation here in Houston. They are also a part 141 school, which is good for those highlighted in my last post and not so good for the others. Understand I love my school and the company I work for, but there are others out there, some better suited for other students. In the case of this post, my shool is irrelivent anyway, we only hire our past students and time builders, we hire 100% of them. Edited December 27, 2007 by HeliMott Quote
