Guest rotorflyr84 Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Anyone take credits online with UVSC and get financial aid for helo flight training? Just wondering what to expect with financial aid in regards to the training aspect. I know helos run higher than fixed wing, so I'm guess not 100% is going to be covered by financial aid. Anyone have expereince with this situation? Quote
HeliHelvig Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I'm doing classes with UVSC and doing my flight training right now. They allow $20,000 per semester to go towards flight training costs and only a maximum of $40,000. I got $20,000 from Wells Fargo last semester and am in the process of getting another $20,000 for the current semester. It's not quite enough to cover all of my training but it definitely helps. And going through Wells Fargo instead of Sallie Mae is like a dream. Sallie Mae was nothing more than a nightmare when I got my loan from them. Quote

UVSC has been great to me as far as helping me get the process started. I just re-sent my 07-08 FAFSA to them for the Summer 08, and finished my 08-09 FAFSA which I also submitted. Got all my counseling sessions done. I emailed my advisor because all my txfr credits have been evaluated, and I want to see where I am at, and what courses need to be completed. Sallie mae can....[insert word of your choice here] ! I have a loan with them, but they denied me and my co-signer for the second half. I didn't even click on their link in the UVSC prefered lenders list. I have had a fed loan with Wells Fargo, and they've been great, so I will most likely send an app their way. Other than that, any words of advice? Words of caution? How's it going for you? What's your degree, and is it easy to complete via online courses (never done online courses before)? Thanks for the reply! Take it easy. Quote

The only slightly bad thing is that the courses (Ground School AVSC1100 and the flight course AVSC1110) are geared towards fixed wing and there are topics and questions specifically about F/W that you would normally not really need to know to get PPL for rotorcraft. However, it doesn't hurt to learn more than just the bare minimums in any field so, it's not really a true negative in my opinion. The courses are fairly easy, but you'll need to apply for the extension for your PPL unless you can get the hours and your certificate in one semester. Once you're in the AVSC1110 class, the syllabus has pretty clear information on what is required and how to request the extension. Kelly Quote
FULL TOUCH DOWN Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I'm doing classes with UVSC and doing my flight training right now. They most of changed from last year when I started the maximum was 60k. Lowering the loan amount does hurt when going to the rotor-wing side specially with fuel and what ever else you can think of rising in price. I also went through Wells fargo with my loan I new I wouldn't get anymore from Sallie Mae since they financed me for my A&P license. Quote
helikriewall Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I'm also currently attending UVSC and going for my associates in science degree. I'm currently taking the private ground and the flight class, and the survey of aviation, so far the work is all pretty basic, but I also taught my self a lot of the ground before I started with UVSC. Taking online course really isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, just as long if your able to set time aside to actually get it done, but it's all at your own pace which is pretty cool. As far as financing goes I got approved for some finical aid but just enough to cover the classes’, so I also went through UVSC alternative loan program but went with Sallie Mae since I got a lower interest rate with them instead of Wells Fargo, which I got 40,000 for both semesters. For some reason Sallie Mae hasn’t been that bad for me. Quote

I guess you might have to get a personal loan plus the UVSC loan to cover it all. Sounds pretty complicated. I wonder why they lowered it... Quote
th67 Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 I have a few questions for you guys attending UVSC. I went to fight school in Phoenix AZ with Quantum Helicopters but I had some friends who went to Utah State, through their aviation program (fixed wing) to get their ratings. Out of curiosity, what are the benefits of attending an actual college or university as opposed to just going to an flight school? Are there financial benefits? Does it take four years to get through the program? I was able to finish my training, from private to CFI in just under a year. I would have been able to finish in ten months if I could have afforded to continue straight through. I can't understand why guys like my friends would spend so much time learning to fly through the university when they could spend a year at a flight school and then almost immediately start working as an instructor, making money and building your time and experience. I would love to know the reasons for those of you who attend UVSC and other such programs through a college or university. Quote
Makahiki Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 I would love to know the reasons for those of you who attend UVSC and other such programs through a college or university. I have not gone to flight school yet but what most people are saying is the reason to do the UVSC online with your flight school is because you will get a loan at a student rate 6.8%, and not have to start paying until you graduate or drop out of UVSC. Its also considered an alternative loan which means the lenders like Sallie Mae and Wells Fargo will give you a loan without a co signer. The only downer that I see is that UVSC changed the max amount you can get from 60k to now only 40k which is not enough to cover flight school but then again it helps. Quote

Also, you don't have to limit your pace to that of the university schedule. You can progress as fast as you want through your local flight school and either a) continue on through UVSC and get your degree while continuing to defer your loan payments (allows you to build up some time and experience - not to mention money before the bill for the training comes due or drop out when you have the rating you want and start paying your deferred loans 6 months later. In short, it gives you a bit of flexibility and some additional financing options. Kelly Quote
Miloe Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Quick comment, UVSC will let you get an extension if your current rating is taking you longer than their standard semester timeframe. The important part is that if you have a multipart student loan... 60k, 80k, whatever and you're getting 20k to do your private with, 20k for instrument, etc. They won't release additional funds beyond 20k per 'rating' and they'll only hold the unused loan moneys for so long before they return the unused portion back to the lender. Is that a big deal? You reapply for the student loans and all should be good. Personally, I'm making big efforts to avoid having UVSC return any loan monies to the lenders, hey they appoved me once, I don't want to give the lenders a second chance to turn me down. Quote

I wonder if they do something different for some people, of if they have just changed it again. I just signed up for the summer and was just told the limit is $13,800 per semester. That could certainly put a damper on helo training. I guess it's a good thing I'm doing it as a fixed-wing add-on. Quote
