Two survive Mullan Road helicopter crash Posted on June 14 By Gwen Florio of the Missoulian A helicopter crashed and burned near Mullan Road Saturday morning, but both pilots escaped with what appeared to be minor injuries, according to Missoula County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Dominick. “The helicopter was on its side, fully engulfed in flames,” when he arrived on the scene shortly after 11:45 a.m., Dominick said. Initial reports were someone was still inside the aircraft, but “luckily, we got a call that two guys got out and there was nobody inside,” Dominick said. The pilots were identified as Randy Spoon, 42, and Duff Van Alstine, 52, both of Missoula. The Robinson 44 helicopter is owned by Mission Mountain Helicopters of Missoula, Dominick said. The pilots said that the helicopter crashed after losing power. “It came down hard in the field, bounced, then rolled over and burst into flames. They were able to get out,” he said. The two men were burned, but were “talking fine and walking fine,” he said. Although the men at first declined medical help, Dominick said they were convinced to go to the hospital. “Both pilots were very calm and didn’t appear panicky,” he said. The crash occurred in a “green, grassy lush field” about 80 yards from a house, and only the immediate area was damaged, he said. Missoula and Frenchtown fire departments responded. Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified, he said.
